Demolished a GTP

On my way back to work after lunch today. Double left turn lane. I'm on the right (outside turn). On the left is a white Grand Prix GTP (97-03 body style). He had slotted brake rotors, upgraded calipers (or possibly just painted), and limo tint. I don't know what else, but I know he thought he was fast. My black Z28 badges are pretty hard to see on the dark blue paint, so he may have thought I was a V6.

Anyway, I switch off the ASR and wait. Light goes green, I get a nice jump, am ahead of him before we've completed the left turn (even though I have the longer route), and pull right past him no sweat. He was surprisingly fast in first gear, but still not enough. Once I hit second, the game was over.

So I'm not really surprised... I just like writing kill stories.

Re: Demolished a GTP

We got 14.7 with like a 2.4 60ft out of buddies stock 99 gtp.
Guys at local track with a few mods like 3.4 pulley, some air induction mods
and think some programming have hit 13.99 at like 98 mph with 2.0 60fts on street tires. Must have been a really good track prep as we had a heck of a time trying to launch his gtp. Tried feathering it ,stalling it,etc.Lots of hop and usually spin.

Stock or even with the better pulley they aren't much match for an ls1 six speed car.Although some of our lt1 stock cars can only hit 13.9 ,14.0 on street tires at local track some days with like 2.4 ,2.5 60fts though.
I think my vert is a pretty good match for those 13.9 modded ones. I think would be around 13.9 with current mods was at 14.3 at 96mph last year and since added 2800 vig ,52 tb and asp underdrive balancer and my ace in the hole nitto drag radials. I can get 2.02 so far best on the highway with the nittos. Not too shabby. Also have suspension work done so no wheel hop either on the vert.

Pretty sure my 99 taws6 would be ugly against most not really highly done up gtps. But there are some very fast ones on the gtp boards but most of them have had big blower swaps, have nitrous, some are even converted to turbos.
They are a cool car though and really like the old 2 door gtp coupes. The new 2 door g6 supercharged will be ok too and the montes and other new 2 door supercharged cars.
Anyway the point in racing is to have fun,as safely as possible. And an auto car can sometimes win over a stick even when the stick is way faster potentially, the key is potentially. All it takes if for you to say stay in the wrong gear like try to bea the gtp from a roll in sixth..or miss a shift, shortshift, hit the limiter..do the infamous three to two.. lots to go wrong with stick cars in racing.

All the more reason to be proud when I win.

I can't wait to race against somebody fast. My wife's GN will beat me, but we've never gone side by side (yet -- planning on fixing that soon). I'm really looking forward to racing someone from a dig, not making any mistakes, and getting my *** kicked.

I had a highway encounter with a seriously-boosted Talon a while back. He took me big time racing from 70mph -- I'll always be curious to know how it would have gone in the bottom end.

Re: Demolished a GTP

Two of the fastest cars at our track are a boosted up talon fwd actually not awd and a grand national with much bigger than stock turbo. Both guys have to slow their cars down to stay 11.5 legal with no rollbars. They both trap around the 125 mark limiting their boost. Our track is 1700 feet so normal na cars take a hit in mph pretty good. Thats where the turbos and forced induction and nitrous cars seem to do a lot better.

I also am on my second talon awd turbo. The first one my 1992 was getting pretty quick but never got around to putting in the high perf clutch that I bought for it and never installed and also didn't install the huge intercooler that I had for it. I sold it and bought a 97 this time around and have big big plans for it.

Like turbos so much now that want to turbo my 99 ta ws6 soon also.

And awd talon or eclipse would destroy your ls1 for sure if you were on street tires. With nittos like I have in my vert it would not be quite as bad but a lot depends on what mods are done to the dsm car. With big turbo and good clutch and stutterbox type launch like I have you can pull 1.7 and 1.6 sometimes even lower 60fts on steet tires !!! Not many cars can touch that. Best out of my 96z with 2800 vig and 3.42 gears on nittos so far is 2.02 60ft.
As you can see you would be playing major catch up with a car that can get 1.6 off the line on street tires!!

And running them down can be hard too. Its pretty cheap really to put 500 or more whp into a dsm these days. You do need support mods but 3000 bucks would make a pretty darn nasty talon or eclipse. And they are much better in winter months too.

one of my best friends runs high 10's in his gp... but then agian he works here www.zzperformance.com so i'd expect nothing less... he also pulls 1.5 60s on slicks and skinnies... but be aware those transmissions will not last long... nice kill...

Re: Demolished a GTP

GTPs are no sports car and deffinatly fun to beat. MY lil brothers 99 4dr GTP went 14.2 @95mph with just an intake. No match for an M6 LS1 but he pisses off alot of mustangs and LT-1s
