Beat a stock EVO 8?

Ok, heres the deal. There is this guy in town that has the Evo 8. A couple of weeks ago after i got all my mods on my car, i messed around with this guy from a roll. i was in second gear at about 3k. He floors it and THEN i floored it and pulled a 1/2 car rather fast no problem then shut down in fear of cops . Anyway, i see him around last night and asked him to look at his engine and things because it was actually a nice new car and I had never seen one. He told me he thought he had about 325hp at the wheels, but had never been dynoed, and that sounded logical to me.

I asked him if it were he that i had messed with a couple of weeks ago, and he didnt seem to remember. so heres the thing, i know i can take him from a roll, ive got way more top end. From a dig i think it is another story. i have an ailing clutch and michelin pilots for tires. im getting a spec stage 4 here in a couple of weeks, and that should help. So what would happen here? i will take a win from a roll, and get beat from a dig? I didnt have very good times at the track due to the clutch and tires. pulled like a 2.0 60' and 14.6 1/4 here at about 4,745 feet.

Thanks for the input in advance,

J.

Re: Beat a stock EVO 8?

I've got a Spec Stage 4 and now my transmission is very noisy at about 2K RPMs. The gear whine is very loud at those RPMs and everyone that rides in my car has to ask "What's wrong with it?" I try to explain that the springs were removed for extra strength, but they don't know what I'm talking about. Also, when I'm pulling into my garage, my driveway is on a upward grade. I ride the clutch some and it makes a loud whrrrr type sound. It also chatters like crazy if you don't engage it just right. I know how to drive it now so that I can engage it smoothly, without chatter, and I know how much gas to give and at what RPMs so that the whine is avoided. It just took some practice to figure it out. However, I got this clutch thinking I would grow into it HP wise. It only costs a few bucks more than the Spec 3. But my car is lightly modded and now I wish I got a Stage 3 to avoid all the gear noise. It has never slipped and it engages hard when I drive it hard. So, where it counts it does great and the price was great from one of the paid sponsors of the site. Dunno if you wanted to hear all of this, but I just wanted to give you some input on the Spec Stage 4. Now go kill some evos.

Re: Beat a stock EVO 8?

Dude, go toast him.

I raced one at the track. I was kind of running my mouth to my friend's dad who drives an SS about how they're not that fast. Then I lined up next to one. I fell asleep at the tree, had a 1.xxx reaction time. The guy got a great launch (not a surprise) and took off. When I finally got around to launching, I got a decent launch. I caught him about 3/4 down the track and had a car length on him at the end of the 1/4 mile. He was driving what looked to be bone stock Evo with a manual trans.

So like I said, go toast him.

I dont know, i dont pull good 60's. at the track my best was like a 2.2, and my 1/4 was 14.6 as a best, with an ailing clutch and street tires, but my trap speed was still like 104. We will see someday i guess.

Well, if it's stock, he's no where near 325 hp at the wheels. Try about 100 less hp at the wheels. The AWD sucks up a lot of the power. They are good for mid to low 13's at 101-103 with a good driver at sea level.

From a roll, you have him. From a dig, it may go the other way.

Hey man i might want to watch out if i was you. The problem is that your at higher elevation, like me, and them damn turbo cars are barely affected by it where as we lose almost a second. I would get my clutch fixed and get some tires and then you should be fine...but just watch out.

I believe the 05 top of the line Evo's crank out 289hp at the flywheel. Hardly 325 to the ground.

Im not too worried about from a roll, just from the dig. more likely to do it from the roll though, at which point i will take him easy.

get yourself some MT et streets. i run mine at 25 pounds and they grab from any stop without any warm up. the traction on those tires is insane.

The noise you describ with your clutch sounds exactly like the noise I had with a clutch in my Corvette. Turns out the idiot that installed it crushed the pilot bearing in the process. It still worked, but made a helluva lot of noise. Might wanna check it out.

Re: Beat a stock EVO 8?

I ran against a basically stock Evo (downpipe, exhaust, etc.) last month at the track. It was 90+ degrees out and the track was very slippery. He ran right at 14.0 at 97mph with a sub 2.0 60 foot time. I ran 13.8 at 102 with a 2.2 60 foot on street tires.

My car is a 97 TA auto with the basic bolt ons- headers, exhaust, cai, etc.

If you can race him from a roll, you should beat him, they get all their speed off the line. From a stop, I think you should still win, just out drive him.

It could go either way from a roll, but if they can drive, the EVO 8 will get you from a stop.

Re: Beat a stock EVO 8?

So then maybe my car being a little in the high miles vicinity (169,xxx), would be a reason to lose. I am not to proud to say that I lost to two. An MR Evo, by 1/4 of a car length, and another EVO 7 or 8 by 1-1.25 car lengths. I need to rebuild and mod quick.

On my old 97 Z28 when it had 211k miles with just Edelbrock mids/ory and a ****ty intake I trapped 108.xx and then I would spray a 150 shot on top of it and the damn thing just wouldn't give up haha... I didn't even tune it for the nitrous just threw in a little race gas and went. pulled a car that trapped 121 pretty well though so I know it was making the power. Just saying these cars can still run great even with a lot of miles
