Good kills. They must not have been able to launch very well or were poorly taken care of.

Re: Beat 2 5.0 mustangs at the strip

i ran a 9.9 with my 94 z28 6 speed 3 months ago, and later on i found out that my 3rd cylinder spark plug wire was cracked and it wasnt sparking. the car felt a lot slower than now. Maybe they had something like that wrong with them.

That's what I ran in my Grand Marquis

It had a few cheap mods and a Superchips programmer. Not too bad for a big family sedan.

Yea ... Their not slow. I mean, their aint no Mustang, but they go for what they are ...

And FWIW, an AOD 5.0 is more likely than a car with bad plug wires. Those AOD cars are literally HORRIBLELY slow to drive. I mean, not in comparison to similar cars, in comparison to all cars, their barely faster than average. I would put a stock 3.8 Camaro up against any bolt on AOD 5.0 that doesnt have trans mods ... Their THAT bad.

Link: My Grand Marquis
(sold after I got the Subaru)

Not many people noticed it was wearing Bridgestone Potenza RE750's

Ahh - that's one of the beauties of having the LSE model. It's the same console & shifter the Marauder got. I also swapped the gauge cluster with the police version so I got a 140 mph speedo instead of the standard 120.

It really could have used a LSD out back. I wanted a Detroit TruTrac but never did it. My old 93 Marquis had a LSD stock and was .2 quicker on the 60ft as a result but ended up running 10.1's. I think my 01 could have done as well as 9.50s if the traction was there.

Very poorly taken care of. My portly Mark VIII with an open 3.07 rear ran 9.5 in the 1/8th at 76.

I have run more than one stock free modded AOD 2.73 geared 5.0 into the mid 9's. I also put 3 of them into the mid 14's in the 1/4 at 95+ with nothing but a good tune and free mods. There is more than just stabbing the throttle on an AOD car to get good times out of it.

For reference my "bolt on" AOD 90 LX was 4-0 versus LS1's. It was far from stock, but it had the stock bore, no head porting, stock compression and no power adder.

Re: Beat 2 5.0 mustangs at the strip

I never said all 5.0's were junk. But every 5.0 AOD that comes in the garage where I work has been ungodly slow compared to the 5 speeds. And they seem to short shift 2nd gear ... Im sure that can be worked around.

But im just saying, for the average driver, to jump in one, I could them running a time that slow.

Theres a modded one that my friend owns, and he cant even get into the 14's with it. It has a CAI, Headers, No cats, Flows, and something else? And then some suspension work and stuff. Its pretty damn slow though compared to my other friends only slightly more modded 5-speed. His 5speed has a intake manifold upper and lower, and it runs 13.4's all day long with his stickies out back. Those trannies, in stock fom, are NOT good for drag racing.

I have seen a lot of them have TV cable gromet problems causing line pressure to be way off. I agree, they do short shift second, the only way to get around it stock is to do the 1-3-1 shuffle. I had a Lentech VB and a 2400 non lockup converter so I did not have those problems.

Agreed.

If he has not already have him descreen the MAF, remove the silencer, set TPS voltage to .98, bump the timing to 16 degrees BTDC and adjust the TV cable for a firmer shift. Cool the car down with ice, do the 1-3-1 shuffle properly (allow a full second before pulling back into 1) and leave at 1500 rpm and he should be well into the 14's. If he allows it to shift for itself it will shortshift and go into 3rd/lockup and fall flat on it's face.

Re: Beat 2 5.0 mustangs at the strip

^ Yup, thats pretty much what his does. Falls flat on its face ... Ill let him know about that stuff though. Cause I do know that the MAF is not descreened yet, and I know he never touched the TPS. Not sure what he did timing wise?

It definatly feels like a real dog compared to the other kids 5.0 though. Very similarly modded other than the intake manifolds, and the other one being a 5-speed, and his 5-speed is a pretty quick car.
