99 Formula VS 04 Cobra

My mods are 236/240 112 lsa cam, fast 90, 4400 stall & most boltons. Not sure what the Cobra has done but it must have been over 500 rwhp with bolt ons, pulley, ect.

First off, this was at a quarter mile track. Test N Tune at New York International Raceway Park. I'm looking for a good race when a C6 Z06 pulls into the lanes. I know how fast they are on the street but often they run high 11's or low 12's at the track. But I wasn't quick enough and someone else beat me to the spot next to him.

So I'm in the left lane waiting for someone to pull up next to me and here comes a red 2004 Mustang Cobra pulling into the right lane. I had seen the guy in the pits with a bag of ice on his motor so I figure him for the kind of guy who doesn't leave his car stock for long.

I do a five second burnout on my bald mickey thompson street radials and stage. The light counts down and on the third yellow I feather the launch so I don't spin. Even still I spun just a tad but then I hooked and was gone. My car shifts into second and I look over and see no one next to me. Around 80 my car hits third hard and I still see no one next to me.

Now the finish line is in sight. I'm gonna win easily! But then as I am approaching the last 10-20 feet of the track he is next to me and reeling me in fast. We both cross the finish line neck and neck with him passing me in the process. At the end it was so close I honestly didn't know who won the race. I didn't see which lane got the win light because I was watching his car as he went by me.

Needless to say my heart was pounding and it was a loooooong ride to the slip station. Then I get the slip and read the results.

Me-------> 11.8 @ 116 on a 1.7 60'
Cobra----> 11.8 @ 124 on a 2.1 60'

Then I looked at the bottom of the slip. LEFT FIRST! I beat him on the tree and that ended up being the difference. I won the race by .0541 which I believe is the closest finish I have ever had. I gave him a thumbs up in the pits but he either didn't see me or didn't want to. Either way it was a beautiful car and a great race.

I'm guessing it had around 500 rwhp by the 124 mph trap speed. I tried to run the Z06 after that but I never got the chance. Too bad because I saw him run a 12.0 and a 11.9 so it would have been close.

That was the second 03/04 Cobra I've raced and I'm now 2 and 0 (knock on wood).

Awesome. Once again shows that horsepower doesn't win 1/4 mile races.

(that's why my car is setup for road racing )

Nice kill!

Thats how most of my races with that breed of mustangs go... butt raped for 80% of the track to have them pull you like a freight train on the other end.

116MPH seems a little slow for what you've got done. Assuming you've got a full weight car right? Do you know the elevation of that track? What size tires?

124MPH Cobra means it was at least had a ported blower, upper and/or lower pullies, bolt-ons, tune etc and your 500rwhp estimate is probably really close.

And good kill BTW! Always nice to beat a stronger car

Sounds about right for a full weight car. My car runs 116.15 @ full weight and puts down 415rwhp. I'd imagine that an intake/cam auto would be somewhere around that rwhp as well.

Full weight minus spare, jack and backseat. I'm about 225 so not the lightest driver

Track elevation is 900 feet. On bad weather/DA days I trap 115. On Good days I trap 116 and on great DA days I have trapped a high of 117.4 or so.

I did swap the aluminum driveshaft for a steel one so that eats a few HP and weighs a little more. Plus the 4L60E with a 4400 stall isn't helping the power to the wheels either. All and all mid 11's at 115-117 is about where I figured I would be.

Tires are Mickey Thompson Street Radials 255/50R 16 on stock rims.

That's what I was thinking.

Thanks!

This is why I love my stalled auto. I run consistent 11.5-11.9 depending on DA and my launch ( a blown launch for me is a 1.8 60'). I have taken out three cars now that trapped over 120 and they all had one thing in common. They were all manual cars who couldn't out launch me and ran out of track before they could finish reeling me in.

Once I beat a C6 Z06 my life will be complete

J/K

But it would be a great feeling

Damn, nice kill. I'm sure the Cobra driver was already collecting the win in his head when you lined up but you yanked the rug out beneath him!

Thanks! I'm sure he was too. We have a few fast LS1's at our track but they usually run in the fast car lanes. I run in the street tire lanes where 95% of the fbodies are 12.5 or slower. So when he pulled up next to me he probably figured I was another high 12 second car he could destroy

I can wish I could of seen his face when I jumped out to a huge lead by the 1/8 mile
