Cool 97 camaro ss vs 350z

Hey guys, I'm in high school and own a manual 1997 camaro ss with slp exhaust, oil cooler, and zr1 wheels (eagle f1 tires). It is an lt1, has the functional ram air and all. I'm about to install a flowmaster super 44, take off the cone of silence, and maybe clean out the cats. A classmate owns an auto Nissan 350z , I'm not sure what year but I wanted to know if I should be worried if we race or no? Thanks guys I'll get more info on the z but I'm pretty sure it's stock.

As long as your car is running well, you guys should actually be about even.

I'd leave the flowmaster right where it is.

Flowmaster is not the best choice for your car.

My car does not have cross flow exhaust, so im not restricted as to what I can put, im pretty sure the 44 will improve it since the one thats on it is 14 yrs old. Besides no other one delivers the sound I was looking for.

The performance offered by a muffler doesn't get worse with age. If anything, rust holes will increase flow and therefore power.

If you really think that no other muffler offers the sound you want, then you must not have heard anything from Magnaflow, Borla, Corsa, Dynomax, etc. All of those will match or exceed the flow you can get from a Flowmaster, too.

Replacing the muffler alone isn't nearly as effective as replacing the entire cat-back exhaust system.

if you take off the SLP exhaust someone should junk punch you... do you have the 2 on the left tips? if so an SLP rep once told me that was one of the best flowing exhausts they ever made... id keep the flow master in the box and toss it in the trash...

Your cars are fairly similar so it'd be a close race. It's a lot easier to drive an automatic than it is a manual, so it'll come down to how well you can launch/shift. Post (or better yet, search) in the technical sections if you want some ideas on what the best bang for the buck is in regards to how to make your car faster.

My last and most important piece of advice is to stay safe and take it to the track.

If the 350Z was a manual, it might be a race. But it's an automatic, and automatics behind small displacement engines with no low end torque make for a slow car. As long as you don't smoke the tires, you shoud win easily.

Too many people around this place hear Flowmaster and assume they're bad. They're wrong. While the 80 series crossflow isn't great by any means, the standard stuff is decent. LT1s with a 40 or 44 series muffler sound good.

I've owned a 94 Z28 with a Flowmaster 40, a 97 Z28 with a stock catback, and my 97 SS. (stock manifolds, and long tubes) so I feel I can talk from experience, though I'm not one of the people dissing the flowmaster. (I wouldn't remove the SLP for Flowmaster either)

I'm a strong believer in choosing the exhaust for the sound... who cares if you lose 3-5 horsepower in flow on a light bolt-on car. Throw in a tb airfoil or something to help make up that lost power.

I've yet to find anyone who's actually heard both options that didn't think that at least one of Borla, Corsa, or Magnaflow (all of which are top-notch in terms of flow) sounded at least as good as Flowmaster.

Borla only sounds good on the LT1s. Magnaflow doesn't sound good on any LS1 I've ever heard. I got rid of my Corsa setup for Flowmasters and will NEVER go back.

While I disagree wholeheartedly, the OP has an LT1, so none of that matters.
