396 vs LS1

heres the lay down,
i just got this 1995 Z28 with a 396 stroker dynoed @ 510rwhp . i don't know how to drive it that well yet and i get a lot of rubber when i try to nail it.
i was out drivin today and i meet up with this 99 Z28 with headers, exhaust and a few other bolt on's. we race probably about 3 city blocks then we had to hit the brakes hard cuz of a stop sign. i beat him by probably a length or so, he had the traction control on so thats why i beat him. then we go again and he kills me by probably two lengths, but i was gettin a lot of rubber in the first 3 gears and cherpin 4th. any suggestions would help. i've only had the car a week and its been kinda cold out here in iowa so i think thats why i get no traction adn plus street tires don't help. he's gettin ls6 heads cam intake on this winter should i be worried about him beatin me? i plan on getting nitto 555 for next spring and maybe i'll learn how to drive by then.

thanks for the help

510rwhp? What kind of heads does your car use (LT1, LT4, AFR ect) ? How big is the cam in that car? I dont know about you or anyone else, but if you have 510rwhp and all he has is boltons and he can even stay with you Id say something sounds terrrrrribly wrong here. Sorry to say, but im calling here.

Hey fstenuf, I think you answered the question yourself, better tires for traction. I bet you never dyno'd the car to prove it has over 500hp. I kind of doubt it too, the seller probably told you this to make the sale. If he showed you a dyno sheet it could be from any car. You should have beaten the LS1 hands down with that power, you couldn't be that bad a driver I hope. Better go to the racing forum and get some tips on launching your car. A 396 stroker is a very powerful motor allthough I question the 500hp. Congrats on your new ride. Get some good rubber and go to the track, lots of experianced drivers there to help you out with your launch.

Go from a 3rd gear roll or run nittos full time.

Well I dont know for sure but your saying that in your first race the only reason why you won was because the LS1 + boltons had traction control on. Then you raced again and he beat you

396ci LT1 w/510rwhp will destroy ANY bolton LSx. Maybe you should try shifting above 3500rpm when racing

A 396 is a beast and should easilly hand a bolt on LS1 its ***. Depending on what heads/cam top end package and tuning he goes with it could be interesting Not saying he will win, still shouldnt be close, but make sure your tuning is updated for the mods you have and you should be ok. A bolt on top end package LS1 will put down anywhere from 380rwhp-440rwhp.

Definately get at least Drag Radials for the street and you will fare better.

the guy works at the local chevy dealership and is gettin it all at cost so i'm guessing its all just ZO6 stuff only in a 99z but i heard that zo6's only put down 350rwhp is that true? i'm definatly gettin Nitto 555's for the spring time and hopefully i will learn to drive it a lil better, should i start it in second or first?
