Tool used to change brake pads

I remember having to have a special tool to change the brake pads on my 93 Z28, I just cant remember what its called. I am pretty sure it was used on the caliper itself after the old pad was off. Anyone know what I am talking about?

You need a 3/8 allen to remove the front pads and maybe a c-clamp to compress the piston, once the pads are off.

The allen is the "brake caliper tool" that you'll find at the auto parts store. Like shoebox said it's just a 3/8" allen head, although you probably shouldn't be able to break that loose with a standard allen wrench, you'll need the socket. There are two caliper mounting bolts on each caliper. And a C-clamp is also a must to compress the piston.

Pipe over the allen wrench will work too
I would recommend a c clam too but its not always neccessary depending on the condition of your calipers, you may be able to do it with some solid pressure to the pads using your hands

I just remember having to have some kind of a special bit that unscrewed something and I didnt have it, but my neighbor did. He moved away, so I figured I would pick one up along with the pads. Hopefully the guy at Autozone will know what I am talking about.

Yeah, just look at the "special tools" section. It is actually called something like brake caliper tool at Advance. It's just a socket with that bit inside it, costs like 2 dollars.

The "screw-in" piston tool is not required for your car. Hondas use them, though.

IIRC, on mine it is. Its a 93, so its got all kinds of differences to it.
edit: The caliper bolts arent 3/8 on my car either, looks like I gotta wait for my roommate to get home to run me to the store again. Anyone know what size the caliper bolt is on a 93?

A big screwdriver against the inside pad will retract the caliper before you remove it. Danny Mc
