shortening rod ends after lowering

So I've read that after lowering, the "correct" way to do it is to shorten the endlinks on the sway bar, I assume that getting a shorter bolt and a sleeve that is shorter the same amount that I'm dropped will do it.

Curious as to what those longer endlinks do, how does the longer bolts/sleeves affect handling? Does it give the bar more leverlage? Does it preload it and not let it do it's job as well? Just curious
