Rear pads and rotors: LT1

I'm doing new pads and rotors on the back of my 96 Z tomorrow. Did the fronts 2 weeks ago and it was really easy. I was reading the Chilton's section on doing the rears and it says to discard the top guide pin bolt on the rear caliper? is this absolutely necessary? Should I just replace the guide pin and are there any other things I should pick up for the swap? Thanks
