Parking brake problem w/ good description
When I first got my car the ebrake only need 3-4 clicks to hold the car on a slight incline or decline. It gradually worsened until one day I pulled it up and SNAP! It moved up and down freely so I knew something had come undone. For about a month I just parked in level spots with the car in gear but I need to fix it now that I have some time on break. I was under the car changing the diff fluid and I found the problem...
The cable that goes from the lever in the car to the junction where it splits into two either snapped, or whatever holds it in place from the other side of that splitter bracket snapped. How do I fix this? Can I order just a new first section of cable, part number? Anybody had this happen to them?

It happened to me on my 91 bird. Went a year not having a parking brake. I was able to get one off a buddy when he parted out his car. I'm not sure if parts stores carry ebrake cables, I imagine they should. If not try a yard, or if your willing to spend the bucks, then a dealer.

You can just get a new front half of the cable. GM will have them, call them ask them for the part number for reference then order it from jason or dal and save half price.

No you only need the front cable. I think mine was around $20 from the dealer. It comes with everything including the metal piece that the two other cables connect to. It's kind of a pain to get in, but that's all you need.
Just check your rotors and pads to make sure the broken E brake didn't cause the pads to rub on the rotors all the time. It shouldn't and you probably would have heard it if it did.
