No Brakes???

I have a problem with my brakes. It's not the cam, because they worked with this cam. One day they just started going to the floor and not stopping. I can get the car stopped if I really try, but it doesn't build the pressure needed. The brakes will work sometimes at high rpms, but at an idle, forget it. I bled the brakes and there wasn't any air in the system. How can I tell if it is my master cylinder or my brake booster? I figured it was the master cylinder because the pedal is really easy to push, it just goes to the floor. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Benji

Re: No Brakes???

If you have the time, you can order a pressure gage from SSBC for about 20 bucks. Put it on the output of the master cylinder in place of the lines(with the engine off). Chances are probable that the MC is bad though.

Re: No Brakes???

I was thinking about just swapping MC's to see if it is the problem. My gf has a 97 Firebird and the MC's look identicle. That would save me 20 bucks. I guess if that doesn't fix it, then it is the booster? Thanks for the help.

Re: No Brakes???

You have to pay attention to bleeding the MC before mounting. Some are bench bled before mounting and others can not be or there could be damage. I don't know about yours.

Your problem is not the booster. If you think about it, the booster is there to make it easier to push the pedal. Your problem is the pedal goes to the floor easily. If the booster was bad it would then be hard to push. It won't go bad and suddenly OVERBOOST the pedal. And even if it did, the MC would still pump the same fluid and not go to the floor.
