New brake rotors for 95 Z28?
New brake rotors for 95 Z28?
Hi Guys,
I have a stock 95 Z28 M6. I installed new Hawks brake pads awhile back but didn't have time to get the rotors and install before moving. I want to replace the rotors now as they are thin (but pass road standard still), and I'm wanting to know if I should just replace them with the OEM or upgrade to something else? I don't race, only drive in summer with the top down for fun.
Thanks!

Powerstop rotors seem to be reliable, and good quality. Store brands, eBay, etc. are likely to be poorly made Chinese junk.
Do not even think about cross-drilled replacements - they are prone to cracking. Even cryogenic treatment can not eliminate the problem - see pictures:

Thanks, Injuneer. I found these powerstop rotors. How do the OEM AC Delco compare to Powerstop?
Re: New brake rotors for 95 Z28?
No idea how "stock" compares. Not likely what GM sells today is anything like what they made 25 years ago. Probably made in China, like everything else. The key is that companies like GM or maybe even Powerstop (if they manufacture in China), impose US level quality control standards. Otherwise the Chinese stuff it mass produced with limited consideration of quality, just low price.
I still have the original front rotors on my 94. But the car has less than 100,000 miles. I bought a set of Baer front calipers and larger rotors, and larger rear rotors, cross-drilled and slotted (before WS6.com posted his photos of cracked rotors) and replaced the rear rotors with the larger diameter Baer cross-drilled and slotted. Never had any problems and the rears never cracked. I never installed the fronts because the car was evolving into a 1/4-mile track car, and the typical 15" front drag wheels would no fit over the Baer brakes.
One premium feature of the Baer rotors was that they were "zinc-washed". The entire rotor is immersed in a zinc solution, and if effect, electroplated with zinc. While the pads wear the zinc of the contact surfaces, the rest of the rotor resists corrosion. 20 years later, no rust on my Baer rear rotors.

Re: New brake rotors for 95 Z28?
Thanks, Injuneer. Your brake set up sounds like the one I wanted to switch to about the same time you installed them, and now 20 years later I still have the stock originals on. I was thinking of doing an upgrade to the LS1 spindles on the front but it's more work than it's worth for the amount I drive it now.
I agree on the stuff GM sold 25 years ago to what they do now. I ordered a power window motor for the 95 from amazon that was advertised as OEM AC Delco. It arrived, and on the box it has the AC Delco label and part number but the actual motor is labeled ACI and made in China, and no AC Delco on the part. I felt taken like this was false advertising as it's not an AC Delco part. I installed it this week and it seems ok for now, quiet and speedy. But this is a good example of what you mean regarding the GM parts now versus years back.
I'll try to order the Power Stop as they look like good quality. I'm in Canada so it's hard finding them, and also stupid expensive to ship over the border...100.00USD for four rotors and shipped to me here is around 320.00 USD (includes parts and shipping). Not even reasonable. I can always drive down over the border when it opens up to get them at a postal outlet that I can ship to. I wish I lived in the US for many reasons. If I can't get them, is there another brand you would recommend?
