Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

ls1 12 inch rotors, minimum 16 inch rim
c5 13 inch rotors, minimum 17 inch rim, not all 17's will fit

ls1 kit on an lt1 car requires new spindles
i dont know about c5 kit on an lt1 car

the ls1 kit in my opinion is a better buy than the c5, because i feel the increase is minimal, it is the same caliper, when the rotor is 13 inches intead of 12 the circumference is longer allowing you to dissipate a little more heat

I just did the LS1 swap ($170 on ebay); it greatly improved my cars stopping power.

Yea did the same thing from Fparts, and greatly improved stopping power from LT1 brakes

Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

I converted my 95 Z28 to LS1 front brakes about 4 years ago. My braking performance improved considerably over the LT1 brakes. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for reliabilty. The LS1 rotors are crap. It doesn't take much heat cycling to warp and even crack them. When I removed them for the last time, they had radial cracks completely through the face of the rotors. I now have C5 brakes using Bob Bishop's aluminum brackets. I purchased my set from his first batch. I must say that the C5 brakes are MUCH better than the LS1 brakes.

Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

Depends on what you want. I have C5 brakes. The C5 caliper is stiffer and looks better, and the pads are slightly larger than the LS1 pads so they last longer, and the rotors are a full 1" larger and are directional vaned. This is better for heat dissipation and stopping power.

For the street, the LS1 setup is great. If you are hard on your brakes, or just want the cool factor of the C5 brakes, then go with the C5's. Just for reference. The LS1 conversion with new pads and rotors is going to run you about $200 for the LS1 stuff and about $70 for Hawk HPS pads and and more for whatever rotors you get. So probably about $350-400

My complete C5 setup including SS brake lines and brake fluid was about $840. The trick is finding the Bob Bishop brackets which aren't made anymore.

I have pics of my C5 setup on my webpage.

Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

can i use the UMI brackets or is it best to try to the bob bishop brackets. I want the best bang for the buck on brake swap. Since i am planning to do this in a week or two . I want to make the car turn and stop like a real sports car and not the daily drive it has been for the last five years but on a budget.
Thank you for the info.

Well, I can't comment on the UMI brackets. I know Bob Bishop had a few issues with their design, but I'm not sure that means they won't work for your application. You might want to contact UMI about it.

I believe that my bracket design will be back in production this summer. He should be able to confirm that and supply a time frame.

Thanks

Good to hear from you Bob. I hope more of your brackets get out on the market.(although I like having such a unique brake system on my Camaro in my local area) Great design. I've loved mine. Thanks again for all the work you put into them.

Is Kevin still working on getting them made?

Dan

Thank you Dan.

I will let the new owner announce when and what he wants to (4 people/businesses spoke with me about buying my complete design). I believe that the brackets will now have wider distribution (and greater volume) than when I sold them, so the price may be lower also. Since they will continue to be manufactured and finished in the same shops that I used, the price won’t be much lower.

Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

Now I know that Bob's design is supposed to be A+ and so I hate to ask this question but will the UNI design work at all even on a temporary basis? The reason I ask is because the funds are availible this moment for the C5 conversion and was unsure if using that set up and then later converting to Bob's was practical or just silly.

As an after thought does anyone have a spare set of Bob's brackets availible or some they need to part with? I would much rather have the genuine item

Re: ls1 vs. c5 swap

I got the Baer LS1 brake kit which included those funky brackets, just needed LS1 spindles and thats all, the Baer kit has slightly modified C5 calipers with re inforcement and nice slotted/cross drilled rotors, same thing basically.

My adaptors that look like Bob's had an issue where you couldn't get much of a socket on the pindle ball joint nut, if you jack up on the spindle and grind away at the bracket then no problem.
