LS1 Brake Swap major alignment problems!!
LS1 Brake Swap major alignment problems!!
I've have had the LS1 spindles and brake combo on my car now for a few months. The alignment was perfect before the swap and after the change only threw it off a little bit so i've been taking my sweet time to get the alignment done.
Today i took it to my local Bob Bell Chevy dealer figuring they would have all the cool tools and laser alignment machines to easily fix my crooked wheels. After the guy raises the car he said my right wheel bearing is about to die making the alignment almost impossible. I told him to do it as best as he could and i would get the bearing fixed later. (they charged $380 for a single hub!). This was the first thing to **** me off because i got the spindle assemblys off ebay and it was supposed to have low milage on them. i also sold my old lt1 spindles including the hubs which i now regret.
Anyways, they didn't have the cool lasers like the other shop and used a crappy string and pully machine to align the wheels. he said it works the same as the laser and will do the job fine. Then,,,4 hours later, yes, i said FOUR hours later, while i waited, the "mechanic" told me my wheels were so bad out of wack that he would need to pull the lower A-arm bolts to grind the holes bigger so he could properly adjust Caster angle. He also asked who put in my long tube headers because "whoever did, hooked up the steering shaft crooked when they were putting stuff back together" i told him that the steering wheel was fine after the header install 2 years ago and to adjust the toe setting and let me out of here. $66 later i get in my car and find that my steering wheel is completly sideways and the car pulls even harder off a strait course!!! Once i got home i called them back immediatly and demanded the refund my money and they said they would.
I guess my questions are can a bad wheel bearing screw up as much stuff as this guy claims? And what should i do to fix my now destroyed alignment?

Yea i figured. I think i mostly needed to vent a little bit. But here is the new strange fact i've noticed about the car. If i am at a completl stop and max the wheel in any direction, when i hit the gas the car will turn that direction without my hands on the wheel. in other words the steering wheel no longer straitens itself comming out of a sharp turn. is this a Caster issue??
