Loose Steering

Hey Guys,
My 97' T/A has loose steering, about 1 inch of movement or maybe a little more at dead center, I already replaced the tie rod ends and that helped but its still there. In my service history it says that the steering rack was changed 3 times lastly at like 60,000 miles, I have around 90,000 miles right now, what do I have to change out to fix this?

Re: Loose Steering

rag joint possibly I have had to replace mine a couple of times. But then again, I run headers and the heat just eats 'em up.

Re: Loose Steering

The rag joint is a coupler on the steering linkage that is made of rubber. It's function is to isolate road "noise". Since it's made of rubber, excessive heat from headers causes it to break down. Many of us have replaced it with a rag joint eliminator from Unbalanced Engineering.

Jack up your car and have a buddy turn the steering wheel while your observe what your steering system does. My play in the wheel turned out to be up and down movement of my pinion gear; ended up replacing the steering rack and solved the problem. My rack had 146K miles on it.
