Help installing front shocks
Help installing front shocks
I have everything off and the spring compressed, but when I took the nut off to get the mount off it won't budge. I have tried heating them up, and prying on it, but it is stuck on there. I have heard a new one is like 100 bucks....anybody else have this problem? What did you do to get them off?
Thanks...
Thanks...
Re: Help installing front shocks
If and when you get the top nut off, I bet you'll find that the upper shock mount is trashed. I recommend anyone doing shocks on their own for our car models to buy the upper mounts just to have them on hand. More so if their F-Body is more than 8 years or so old. Buy them from someplace that'll accept returns if you don't end up using them.
If you haven't gotten them apart, I'd throw the unit back in, order the upper mounts, and try again once you have all the needed parts.
BTW -How is the ENGINE tech?
Suspension forum would have been a better fit.

Re: Help installing front shocks
I'm in the process of doing mine right now also and when I got the top nut out the shaft didn't come out of the top mount either. What I had to do was hold the top mount still and spin the shock from the bottom to unscrew it. Even with the nut off it's still threaded in. Hope that helps.
Re: Help installing front shocks
I tried to cut the staft in half, and my hacksaw won't even cut through it. I also tried spinning the bottom, but it doesn't spin the top. I have tried heat to losen it up, a sledgehammer to pound it off....this thing just won't budge. Anyways, I am ordering both drivers and passenger side replacement mounts, Advance Auto the KYB's for like 60 bucks a piece, which is the cheapest I have seen. I'm just going to take my dremel and cut the mount off that way I can get the spring and the lower seat off.

If you would take the time to go get a new metal cutting blade for your hacksaw, it will cut right through the shaft like butter.
Re: Help installing front shocks
I did. I got a brand new hacksaw blade yesterday, but it won't touch it. Anyways, I just finally got around to fixing my sawzaw, so that should be able to cut through it. I don't think I had enough room with the hacksaw to get it to work right, with the spring compressors on there.
Re: Help installing front shocks
Yep, the sawzaw took about a minute to cut straight through it. Anyways, are there any parts I need to save off the old shock besides and lower spring seat and the spring?

Re: Help installing front shocks
^^^^ and probably the top shaft protector (the big, long, hard, plastic part). My new shocks didn't come with it. So when I put my 1st shock back in I didn't use it. Wrong! You need the thick spacer inside it for everything to seat right. Ended up digging it out of the trash and re-doing that one.

Re: Help installing front shocks
Yeah I saved the hard rubber bumper thing. There is no way I can reuse that black plastic peice for anything, I ended up cutting it up. Do I need the big metal peice at the top of shock that the rubber bumper would hit into? Maybe it would just be easier to ask what I can throw away....

Credit to Injuneer, here's a picture of the stock shock.

I swapped stock for stock, so I had to reuse or replace every piece.
If the KYB's you bought are an exact stock replacement, you will have to as well.

Re: Help installing front shocks
The top nut on one of mine was spinning as well, and after looking at it I noticed that the nut and the stud were both spinning. I was able to grab the top of the stud with pliers and turn the nut with a wrench and get them apart pretty easily.
