Re: Heater Hose lowering mod w/ Konis

At the top of the rear spring is an approx. 1" thick hard rubber mount, that isolates the spring from the body of the car. Remove this mount and use a piece of rubber heater hose. Simply force a 6"- 8" length of hose onto the top coil, using lots of lube and elbow grease to push it on. Try to wrap as much of the top coil as possible. By doing this, you've effectively removed the height of the rubber isolator mount, and replaced it with heater hose. Expect about a half inch drop. I also used thin sheets of butyl rubber (the stuff they use to make a roof on a wharehouse) cut into donuts to isolate the top and bottom of the spring from the body and axle. Simply glue the top sheet into the spring cavity to make reassembly easier. While not necessary, it does provide a tad bit more protection in case the rubber hose cannot be slid onto the coil far enough.

Very simple to do...

Sorry, but no. I didn't think of taking any close-up before and after pictures. I will say this...I would not drop my car any further than I did. As it is, I can't get my floor jack underneath her anymore from the side. I can't imagine how low a 1" drop is. When I look underneath, the low parts are only a few inches off of the ground now...plenty low for me.

I did it and it seemed to squeek and the lowering was not even noticable, so i threw the isolators back on.

Re: Heater Hose lowering mod w/ Konis

I just got done installing a set of Koni's and Strano sway bars, and also did this mod with the heater hose on the rear springs as al 96 Ram Air T/A did. It took about 1/2 inch off the rear. When I installed the Koni's on the front, I set the snap ring on the lower notch on the shock tube, which also took about 1/2 inch off the front. I have no noise coming from the front or rear, and what a HUGE difference in handling, as well as the ride. Taking 1/2 inch of the ride height is about as much as I want to go on the roads here in NJ.
