Front Bilstein Question

Hello guys, I got a set of SLP Bilstein's today. And one of the front shocks came without the metal thing (dont know what its exactly called), nut and a washer. It can be seen on a pic

My question is, do I need it to install the shocks? Or can I reuse the one from OEM shocks, if there is one? Or if not.... where can I get replacement?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Well, where did you get it them from? SLP directly? Call and ask why it's not in the package

I installed those on my car, and quite truthfully I can't even tell you what those are for. I put them on mine since they came with the shock, but I don't see any function to them so you should be fine running without them, or without one.

Thanks for the reply. So that circle plate is not necessary for the install? All I have to find is nut then... I hope it is so.

It slips on the top of the shock itself.... on here...

No idea what it's for either.. You may be able to use the one of the stocker, but I think that one is to small.

I honestly didn't see a use for it myself, but I installed it anyway... Injuneer probably knows.. Waiting for him to chime in.. I'm curious too.

Just noticed that Koni's have plain metal circle plate.

So Im wondering if stock shocks have any plate/seat at all?

Went to a mechanic I know today, he said the main purpose of it is to protect the seal of the shock. Sounds about right.

There's something important about the Bilsteins. Check the part numbers. When SLP made the Bilstein Level II suspension package for the 96/97 SS, they put Eibach springs on it, which lowered the car. They then went to Bilstein for the shocks. Those shocks are not the same shocks for a regular LT1 due to the spring height. The Bilstein shocks in the L2 package are of shorter height and have different valving/rebound.

Not sure if those are applicable, as shown in your picture.

Ultra_Dog, I got Pro Kit as well going in the car along with Bilstein's. Should it still be a problem? Gonna look up the part # when I get home. Thanks for the info.

^ The bilstiens aren't really the greatest choice for the Pro Kit. The spring Rates aren't really the best. If you are doing the Pro Kit, contact Strano to have a set of shocks revalved for your specs... or just get the Koni's...

It seems like a formidable piece to leave out. I would be uneasy about doing so. Even the stock shock has a thick piece there. I don't know if you could transfer that piece to the Bilstein.

Thanks guys, I'll try it with the stock if I dont find other way out, hope it will work. I've been dying to put the new shocks/springs in my car. And now that I have them it's the only thing that stopping me.
