Does bilstein actually make more than one shock for the 4th gen?

 

I love the internet.... mostly because so much of what you read is either wrong or half true. But it doesn't stop people for talking about what they don't know.

SLP Bilstein's are NOT a set of 4 HD's. The rears are the same, the fronts have some rebound added, and compression taken away. They are valved for the Level 1 springs in front, not changed for those springs in the back. The goal of the compression damping change is ride, but that make dive worse to. HD's don't ride hard, so that befuddles me. They have rebound added which is better for lowering springs than HD's, but they don't have enough of it added for most of the springs out there (Level 1's are softer than most all other lowering springs, and have more travel in which to work).
They are what they are, and valved for a particular spring. They do a pretty good job of that, but are on the softer side still.

HD's are meant for stock spring rates, not more. That's why SLP and to a greater extent I change the valving in the shocks. Having driven many cars with HD's on the stock springs, I feel that they are even a fit lacking in rebound control anyway, let alone with 40 or 50% more spring rate.

When I Revalve it costs more. That's because mine aren't mass produced like SLP shocks are, but build for you after knowing the spring rates, height, bars in use, tires in use, and the overall use of the car. Revalves are NOT one-size fits all, and unlike the HD's or SLP's that are valved for a certain spring that most don't have, Revalves are done for *your* springs, etc.

 

01 FS Z28 would HD's be ok for a stock car? I have a 97 WS6 and would like a little better ride....as in taking corners harder and such? I dont want to spend alot but like somthing. I would love to get yours but I dont think I could swing the 500 for them. Your help would be great!

HD's are a big improvement over stock DeCarbon's. Not everyone needs more than HD's, the thing is most do and don't realize it. From what you wrote above, I'd say that HD's would suit you well. The real issues start with lowering springs, and/or the folks who think the car *needs* springs because of the disconnected, floaty feeling that's actually the shocks fault instead. In short, very very few people interpret what's happening correctly. HD's are $329, so they do save money over Revalves, which are essentially the Bilstein Sport shock that Bilstein never built.

 

I have the Bilstein HD's from Sam (not revalved) with my stock springs, and they are a very nice upgrade. Anythink stiffer on the compression, and it would be too rough for me. They are just right. Combine them with the 35mm front sway bar, and 21mm rear bar, and woohoo! It's a thrill to drive. A night and day difference from stock.

I have a 97 WS6 with Intrax lowering springs. The ride quality is great, but I'm getting close to needing shocks. I have a full BMR rear suspension, airlift bags in the rear coils but the front is still stock. What shocks would you suggest? The primary purpose of the car is street driver, some dragstip action but still like it to perform in the corners. Any insight would be appreciated! Oh.... wheels are Borbet Type M 17x9.5 and SZ50s 285/40/17 on all four corners.

 

That they added rebound without adding compression damping (in fact they took it away according to you) is NOT good for lowering springs. With stiffer aftermarket lowering springs, this can lead to a jacking effect during long, bumpy corners. It could also lead to compromised tire/road compliance. I can't believe they removed compression damping...

 

Are they already off sale? I see them listed as $399 on SLP's site...damnit!!!!!!! I've been wanting a set for a couple years now, and was waiting to see a better price!!!

Sure it does or I would not have been able to buy a set from them a while back. Look again.
