Brake booster?

I think my brake booster may be going out in my 1996 z28. I did the ls1 brake upgrade and the car does not stop all that well; my dads 1996 1500 truck with stock brakes stops better. Also when the car is in park and I pump the brake the rpm increase about 100-200rpm's then goes back down when I stop pumping the brakes. If I plug the vacuum line going to the booster the peddle does get harder but when I pump the brakes the idle does not change. I think I may have a slight leak inside of the booster. What do you guys think should I go out and buy a new booster? And how hard will it be to change it, it looks like it is in tight.
