Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
I am considering the Wilwood 6 piston brakes up front on my Z to replace my Baer Claw 2 piston I currently have. Does anyone that has Wilwoods have anything - or + to say about them? How do they perform and hold up?
Re: Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
I have talked to tech people at Brembo, Baer, and Wilwood. Brembo (from the sounds of things) seems to have the best kit. Unfortunatly their Biggest kit also has the biggest sticker price ($2900!) Bear is a good company, but for their 6 piston kit, the price is just under the Brembo price ($2850). I currently have the 2 piston Bear Claw system on my Z and it was a HUGE difference from stock. But now, I crave even more stopping power, and with some places advertising the Wilwood 6 piston setup for $1200, it sounds like thats what I will go with. I just wanted to ask around and see if the price matched the quality and stopping power.
Re: Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
I've seen mixed reviews on Wildwood... I would not expect them to compare favorably with Bear or Brembo products even at the same price points.
Personally I'd stay with the Baer Claw's if I were you.

A good friend of mine had a wilwood setup on his front brakes and the rotors warped after 10,000 miles. He purchased their "street/strip" package 4 years ago and came to find out from wilwood that those brakes are NOT for the street. They are for stip only and they refused to replace them. You may not have the same problem but make sure that kit is for the street and if anything breaks they will replace it.

Re: Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
I am not sure if they recently changed width or not, but after talking to them on the phone, their rotor width is bigger than my current cross drilled and slotted rotor from Baer. Also, you can buy different rotors to fit their calipers if you still are not comfortable with the ones they send you. At the same time, I am confident that the duration of the Brembo or Baer brakes is probably better than the Wilwood. However, with the price being more than twice of the Wilwood's, its hard to declair that it is that much of a difference. I am sure that the brakes will work, and last for quite a while.

Re: Anyone have Wilwood brakes?
They may have redesigned their hardware so some of the criticisms may be outdated... but the way I see it, their brakes are waayyy too inexpensive to be a quality product. Remember the "if it sounds too good to be true" adage. A good (alcon) 6 piston brake setup will run you 3k+... wilwood is what... half that?
I'd love to be proven wrong though... maybe the rest of the industry is just gouging the crap out of us.

Sounds good! By any chance have you had or ridden in an upgraded brake F-body before? I am trying to find how much of a difference your kit will be in comparison to the Bear Claw system I currently have.

silverRam how big are your rims/tires? ost of us(including me) have 17's on our cars? if you have 18's do you think there is enough room for a pair of 17's to fit over those huge brakes?
