ABS/Traction Control Light

My 1996 Camaro has the ABS and traction control light on the instrument panel. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? No problem with stopping. I havn't notice if the traction control is working. I guess I will have to pouch it. To verify.

Any suggestions?

Make sure the ground junction near the passenger side strut tower is clean of debris and tight. I had the same problem and I cleaned all of the ring terminals, scraped some paint off the metal chassis, reinstalled everything, and the problem went away.

Re: ABS/Traction Control Light

Do you mean the "ABS INOP" and "ASR OFF" lights? Likely that a problem with an ABS sensor or other component has cause the EBTCM to turn off both systems.

Since this isn't an "engine" topic, let's move it to "Suspension, Chassis and Brakes".

ABS INOP" and "ASR OFF" lights are both on. I cleaned the ground wire on near the strut tower and the light is still on. Do you think the fuse is bad? What are some steps i can do to troubleshoot?

Re: ABS/Traction Control Light

Check the third brake light (CHMSL) and see if it's burned out. The will set a code in the EBTCM (electronic brake/traction control module) and shut down the ABS which will shut down part of the ASR. If that's not it, a scan of the EBTCM should identify the cause of the problem. Requires a Tech-2 or other high end scanner.

You can't scan the EBTCM with a PCM scanner. As already noted, they need an OTC Tech-2 (GM shop bi-directional scanner) or one of the high end (e.g. Snap-On) ABS scanners. If your AutoZone happens to have one of these ABS scanners, they should be able to, but I don't think many of them have it.
