ABS Problem

My girlfriend has a 95 z28. Something is seriously wrong with her braking system. First of all, her ABS INOP light goes on and off randomly. Second of all she told me that sometimes it feels like she is sliding on snow when she brakes which to me sounds like the ABS is kicking on at random. Also the Low Traction light comes on when that happens which also points to the ABS kicking on. I don't have the money to go replacing all the sensors until I find out which one it is or I would. Does anyone know what this could be?

Re: ABS Problem

I had this problem early on (20K miles); the dealer remove the rear ABS sensor from the differential and cleaned the pick-up. That cured the issue. Worth a try.

Re: ABS Problem

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be an intermittent short in the wiring harness on the differential. One of the mounting tabs for the brake line had rubbed thru the insulation on the rear wheel speed sensor harness and would cause an “out-of-range” system fault. On my 1997 we scanned for a drive-train code and found right rear wheel speed sensor “defective, or shorted.” That put me in the area then I found the harness problem. If your ABS/ASR works OK for a while then faults, the system is getting an “out-of-range” input from one of the wheel speed sensors (reluctors).

Re: ABS Problem

If you can get the car scanned, it might just tell you exactly where the problem is. (make sure they can scan for ABS codes)

Re: ABS Problem

I have an ABS problem (light is on steady) right now. I've pulled all the fuses and relays and plugged them back in, including inspecting the plugs on the ABS unit. Looks like I need to take a look back on the rear end. Anyone got a pic of what I'm supposed to be looking at? Shoebox?

Re: ABS Problem

For the last guy that responded, check your third brake light to make sure one of the two bulbs are not burned out. That will kick on your ABS light in one is.
