ABS Inop light only after using reverse?
Within the last week, I started having my "ABS INOP" come on after using reverse and then going into 1st gear (it's a manual). Car is 96 Z28 with traction control. The light doesn't come on until I'm in 1st after using reverse. If I kill the engine and restart the computer and don't use reverse, the light stays off. I've searched the site and checked that my 3rd brake light and reverse lights are working. Anyone else have this? Also I have an OBD II scanner and I don't show any codes when I scan the PCM. Is it a bad BCM or what? I'd rather nail it down to one item rather than just R&R every possible module...thanks in advance.
Re: ABS Inop light only after using reverse?
Also there's no SES light on. Might explain the lack of codes. After reading many different threads, I'm going to clean the sensors and see what happens. 2 in the back and 2 in the front, right? I've noticed the rear ones before but not the fronts. There weird thing is everything is fine as long as I don't use reverse. If it is an ABS module, how much are they and where do I get it?
Re: ABS Inop light only after using reverse?
You have a wheel bearing going bad most likely. The ABS sensor is in the hub unit, and backing up is causing a larger amount of air gap in the sensor. Soon it will start happening all the time.
I'm sure you bearings are original, and 9 years old at this point....

Re: ABS Inop light only after using reverse?
Yes that's true, and I'll check them for endplay, but they've only got 70,000 original miles on them. Thought it was more like 100,000+ for wheel bearings. Last time I did a set they were 14 years old a Jeep....Anything hard about Camaro bearings?
Looks like it was a dirty sensor.
Cleaned both rear ABS sensors last night. Passenger was fairly covered in metal filings. Appears to have fixed the problem (3 times I've backed up without a reoccurrence).
Hope this helps someone else in the future. After digging through other posts, I did find one with a very similiar problem and cleaning the sensor worked for him as well. Thanks for the info.

Could you go into a little more detail about the task at hand?
Thanks!

Re: ABS Inop light only after using reverse?
Very simple. If you have Traction Control there will be two sensors (one per wheel); if not there will one sensor on the differential. I have Traction Control so that's what I'll explain. Procedure is the same for non-TC cars just different location. Jack up the rear of the car. Looking from the center of the car, you'll see a black wire loom with a plug going into the aft part of either hub. Carefully unclip and remove the plug from the sensor. Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolt above the sensor holding it in place. Simply pull the sensor out. It should have some metal filings all over the tip and possilby body of the sensor. These interfere with the magnetic pickup, It's just a somewhat powerful magnet. Remove all the metal filings from the tip especially. I used a paper towel and some low pressure air. Reinstall senor, retighten bolt, reinstall plug. Repeat for other side. Yes, it's that simple. Save considerable $$ over having you friendly neighborhood GM dealer do the same....
