ABS acting funny.. only when wet, but then discovered something.

It was raining pretty hard today and as I was going down the high way I went to pass someone and down shifted one gear and the car jerked and sputtered VERY badly.. almost as if the power was cutting out and then coming back.. (this only happens in the rain). Well I decided to just drive and mess with it later, then I went to a buddies house and he suggested to take the ABS fuse out and see if it still does it because his was messing up semi like mine and his problem was his abs. So I took it out and the problem is gone but the car also drives alot better.. or so it seems.. It might be in my head but it sure does seem to drive alot better.. What can this be? maybe a sensor on one of the wheels? The abs box itself didnt get wet. only the tires were soaked so since it only happens while its raining I figured something to do with the wheel sensors.. When the fuse was in the light came on as normal and turned off at startup.. Also when I turn the key and not start it just turn the power on the ABS makes a weird sound.. anyone have any ideas??

If your ABS where acting up you should get one of 2 indications. If the system where trying to activate the ABS, the LOW TRAC light should come on. Or if the system where malfunctioning, the ABS INOP light should come on. Did either of those lights come on?

Next remember that ABS can not increase the brake pressure over that of the master cylinder. Only reduce it. So therefore, it's not increasing or "applying" the brakes to slow you down when your event occurs.

Next, I didn't see any connection between the ABS and the ignition system on your 95.(I assumed you do not have traction control) I may be wrong here but I'm pretty sure only the systems with traction control have a connection from the EBTCM and the PCM to retard the spark during a braking event. But even that system will illuminate the "LOW TRAC" light when a braking event occurs and the system retards the spark. Under normal conditions, the system will not activate unless the brake is depressed.

Lastly, I believe if the wheel sensor looses signal as though it's slipping when the pedal IS NOT depressed, you will get a soft code and the ABS INOP light will come on. If the signal is varying when the pedal IS depressed, the system should activate and the LOW TRAC light will illuminate.

I guess what I'm getting at here is your ABS can not do what your thinking it will unless you had traction control and a malfunction. The more likely explanation is your ignition system is experiencing an intermittent fault and it just happened to be functioning when you removed the fuse. I didn't notice in your signature if you have a CAI. Is it possible you have the airbox off or drilled out and your airfilter is getting wet?

BTW, ever go fishing on what I think is called Dania pier. I haven't been there in almost 30 years. The Barracuda are just amazing there. It's a wonder people swimming near by don't get chewed up.

I have traction control.... ..

LOL. yea! I surf at dania Pier all the time.. well dania beach, which is like 20 ft from the pier.. If you go at night you can see some nice size sharks from the pier with a flash light.. they arent there in the day time though.. kinda freaks me out but I still surf.. lol

I think the next thing to try is remove the wire from the EBTCM to the PCM for spark retard and see if that corrects the problem. I am out of town right now and don't have my books though.

My abs was doing the same thing. You could lock up the wheels and the LOW TRAC light would come on but the ABS INOP light wouldnt light up even though it wasnt working. Finally in traffic i was slowing down and the ABS completely malfunctioned. Took away all braking pressure and just started activating the ABS for no reason. Almost hit someone too. I just pulled off into the turning lane and pulled into my mom's office. Lucky i was that close. The ABS INOP light did come on while doing this but the ABS still was activating for no reason. I removed the relay and fuses and it's been fine ever since.

It is likely that you have a bad ABS sensor in one or more of the front hubs.

I have had this happen at low speed, nice to have your front brakes quit as you are approaching a wall getting ready to park. It feels just like you hit a huge pool of grease. Major pucker situation. Replaced one of the front hubs under warranty and it never happened again.

A bad ground can also cause the problem. If the ground near the red terminal block is loose. It can cause the ABS to flicker on and off.

If you hook everything back up and get the problem to happen again, the computer stores a code and I bet you will be able to find the problem hub. The code may still be there right now, I would get the car scanned.

This brake system was designed to work with ABS. Unless you do a new prop valve and convert completely away from ABS, pulling fuses is a bad idea.
