They are that expensive due to the fact that they are made out of L19 material for us by ARP. Plus they were only made in a limited run. The L19 studs have a much higher clamping force than the standard ARP head studs. These studs are great for boosted or high nitrous applications.

Thanks

What's ARP say about durability, specifically corrosion resistance, in using L19 for head studs? Do LS1 heads studs pass through the coolant jacket at all? seems like a poor material application if what ARP says about their L19 alloy is true:

L19: This is a premium steel processed to deliver superior strength and fatigue properties.... blah, blah, blah... This material is easily contaminated and subject to stress corrosion. It must be kept well oiled and not exposed to moisture.
(http://www.arp-bolts.com/media/pdf_files/arp_cat03.pdf on page 20)

Doesn't sound like a great material for a head stud to be used long term... which is probably why its not a common item for ARP to produce. Although they do go on to talk about custom-ordered head studs, even L19, for unique applications (all listed on page 21).

Did ARP put any reccomendations on installations/use for these studs? Just wondering if they're a "race-only" item with the expectation that they'd be removed and inspected every couple events.

Just verified... as with most engines, LS1 head studs/bolts will pass though water jackets.

Guess these are "race use only" items.

On the LS1 engines, the cylinder head bolt holes do not go through to water. These studs are intended for high cylinder pressure applications, so more toward the race side of things. But if you have a high HP street car they would also be good to have.

Thanks
