Yo Orlando/UCF People, Question For Ya:

Hi, my Z28 has that lame stock head-unit with the monsoon speakers, and they all sound like crap. I try to turn up the bass ****, I get speaker-distortion, even though the speakers are all aftermarket except for the tiny ones in the cargo area. I'd like to replace the head-unit, as well as possibly get a bigger sub, maybe in that hideaway box for the rear. I asked one of the guys at Best Buy about removing the headunit, and was told that it was a no-go because then my keyless entry and alarm system wouldn't work. Personally, I thought it was crap. I'm not seeing how the stereo would also be the driving unit for the alarm/keyless entry.

So, my question is, are there any of you running an aftermarket system set-up, and did you get it done at a local shop? In fact, do any of you know a local audio shop that won't give me a line of complete crap like the Best Buy guy did?

Please help me, because I love having a fast car with big LS1 power, but you can't have a fast car without being able to crank up the music while driving with the tops down. I mean, come ON we live in Florida fer crissakes!

Can anyone help me out, here?

Thanks in advance.

To answer on the speakers, I sure don't my friend. When I got the car, the fronts had already been changed out for a somewhat crappy pair of Sony Xplodes. I changed out the sail-panel speakers, but tossed the stock ones I'd removed out. I wish I could help ya, man.

Nobody here has an aftermarket head unit? I find that hard to believe.

One problem you are running into is the aftermaket speakers with your monsoon.

The Monsoon system runs of a 2 ohm setup, and you probalby have 4 ohm spekaers(since like 95% of aftermarket speakers are 4ohm)

I am not sure what it takes to remove a head unit on a newer car, you can try and ask in the stereo/electronics setion of this board.

But as of now you got 2 main things you can do with your stereo...

1. Buy all stock monsoon speakers and put them back in their spots...

2. Or ditch the monsoon amp, and put in an aftermarket one and hook it up to all your aftermarket speakers... I think you can still use the stock headunit doing this but double check.

Either way I am sure bth will sound much better... Tell you ythe truth I love my monsoon setup, just hate the fact the door speakers blow easily, and there isn't really much of an upgrade I ca put in that is less likely to blow.

I did my own system in my car. I found it was actually quite easy in these cars. Send me a pm or anything if you got any questions.

Hmm, I have a 2001 Camaro, and previously a '98 Camaro, and both had the radio taken out and the same aftermarket one put in at the best buy on colonial. Ask for a guy named Soel, (like Noel with an S), he does good work. I think there is something called Theftlock or something that prevents your radio from being stolen, but shouldn't tamper with your alarm or keyless entry, both of my work just fine.

PS - I still have the stock speakers with an aftermarket head unit if that factors in anything.

Yeah, the stock 6-speaker 500-watt monsoon.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I haven't heard too many F-Bodys that sound better than mine, and I have to have the cheapest system out there by far.

I have the factory 500 Watt Monsson system in car, but behind the radio I installed a Line output converter ($25) which basically taps RCA cables into the wiring mix and lets you keep the stock head unit.

In the trunk I have a 10" 500 watt Sony X-Plode sub that I got "open box" from cirtcuit city for $30.00

It is powered by a 600 watt "Pyramid" amp I got new off ebay for $70 with shipping. I know the amp is a crap name, but it powers that one 10" sub just fine, in fact I have very little power running to that sub.

Oh yeah, that sub sits in a band pass box that I got at a garage sale for $10...but I sold the sub for $10, so that was basically free.

That adds up to $125...plus whatever I spent in wires and fuses.

My system may be ghetto as hell, but it fugging pounds and sounds good as hell. That is, when I don't take the 2 minutes to remove it for the track.

I like how by looking into my car, you can't tell there is anything there, especially by looking at the stock head unit. Bust most of all, I love how it cost me next to nothing and sounds better than 95% of the systems out there.
