SunPass

How many of you have received a citation in the mail for not paying a toll?

I did and I've decided to fight the citation... After reading this article
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-t...ostemailedlink
I decided to get my SunPass detailed statement for the month when the infraction took place. It was a little challenging because I didn't have my SunPass account number. I did finally get the statement and what did I find???
At the EXACT time, date, and location (Sr417/Seminole - Lake Jessup Lane: 07D) I PAID THE TOLL!!!!!!!!!!
I sent in a copy of my statement with my Not Guilty plea and my citation... I hope they just dismiss the charge, but if I have to appear in court, I'll be pissed, but I should win.

I'll keep you posted, but if any of you get cited, call SunPass immediately and they may be able to correct it for you... I waited too long and the citation had already gone to the court. If you wait too long... Fight the ticket!

Re: SunPass

Re: SunPass

It might be that they can't get a good picture of your license plate... I think I'm going to get one of those anti photo covers...

With my citation, I got a really nice pic of the back of my Z and could read my plate perfectly...

Apparently, back in May they started a "zero tollerance policy" on toll enforcement... If they can link your sunpass to the license plate in the photo, then they'll just deduct the toll from your account. If not, they'll send you the citation...

When I got my sunpass all I had was my truck. I never thought to update the account when I got my Z a couple of years back...

Re: SunPass

Is your license plate updated with sunpass..

My understanding is if it doesn't go off it takes a pic, then sees if you have an account and automatically deducts from your car.

if it does it a few times they will mail you a thing to repalce our battery.(free at lowes)

Re: SunPass

I didn't have it updated with the license for my Z28... I do now...

My real issue here, is that according to SunPass

So? Why am I getting a ticket???

I don't think that is very accurate. I just got a letter in the mail a few days ago saying that my transponder didn't work at 3 different tolls and that I should change the battery in it. It also said right on the letter that they allow you a courtesy of 3 non-payments for tolls a month and then after that they can issue you a UTC...but even in my case they just sent me a warning letter. Hell I have gotten a few warning letters but never a UTC

I think that the fact that they sent you a warning letter telling you to change your battery indicates that they know that your car uses a sunpass... At the time of my citation, sunpass didn't know that my Z had a sunpass... My sunpass had always been attached to the license plate of my truck...

I'm not sure that all the stuff that was written in the Orlando Sentinel article is accurate, but it sure seems to be getting a lot of media coverage now in the Orlando area...

I pay on average about $50 in tolls per month through sunpass... I like the system and hope that they continue to improve it... I'd prefer that they stop charging tolls, but It's still worth it to me, to pay $1.50 to save a half hour in traffic...

Re: SunPass

Back when I was driving to Kissimmee every day I was going through 3 or 4 toll booths each way. It missed a beep at least once or twice per day. I was also driving a car that I would loan to my sister pretty regularly. She also would use the Greenway and had her own SunPass too. I started out having to call and take the tag out of my SunPass account every time I loaned the car out and then call to add it back in when I got it back. I didn't want to have to pay her tolls if the darn transponder didn't register. That got old and I eventually just left it off thinking I would get another warning before I got a ticket. Welp, I didn't. But it gets better.

I got home from work one Monday night to see a message saying that I had a registered letter from "expresswy authority". They would NOT deliver the letter without a signature and said I had to pick it up in person. I wasn't going to be able to pick up the letter from the post office until the weekend. I called the post office and they said they would hold it till the weekend. When I got there on Saturday they had already sent it back. I called the expressway authority and they had no information for me. So I assumed it was another warning. Big mistake. It was in fact a ticket for ~$85. So two months go by and I get a letter from Tallahassee saying my license was going to be suspended for not paying a ticket. Of course it was then too late to contest the ticket. I had to drive to Orange County to pay it. There was an additional late fee of ~$30 and nothing I could do about any of it.

Moral... make sure that your tag is attached to your SunPass and listen for that beep.

Re: SunPass

I hand-hold my Sunpass in both my car and on my crotch rocket. It goes off probably 70% of the time in the T/A, way less than that on my bike (I guess there's a reason they say not to hand-hold them), but I've never gotten a warning/letter/anything. I'm not sure if they charge my acc't based on my license plate of my car, but you could just do like I did on my bike, bend your license plate out at an angle. They've never charged me for the missed tolls on my bike. Either they really like me cause I'm so pretty or they can't see my plate.
