Optispark needed

My BIL just bought a 95 Z28 Convertible in really nice shape yesterday. It's running rough and at 98,000 miles I told him to have the plugs and wires replaced. While the shop's in there I figured it was a good idea to do a compression check too since the car has a 30 day warranty (not including the "tune-up" that they said it needed). I expect it to need an optispark but the other stuff might make a difference first and then he might not need the opti.

So throw some recomendations of shops that can do the job without screwing anything else up that won't charge dealership prices. Also, where is the best place to get the parts? Should he get a vented or non-vented unit? I forget which is better. He lives in Casselberry but can probably drive a bit to have it done right.

Thanks in advance...

The 95's & up take the vented opti which is actually the cheaper one. I just picked up an OEM non-vented one from an Ebay vendor that was closing out their stock. I did a quick search and it doesn't look like the vendor I bought mine from has any vented ones left. The only OEM one I see on Ebay is here,

I had a shop do plugs & wires on my car and they broke it off up my *** so I wouldn't recommend them even though they did a good job, so no help on a shop.

I do all my own repairs - but when I get into something that I'm struggling with I take it to Central Florida Auto Repair - they are on 441 OBT at Hiawassee/Wekiva Springs Trail, 407-880-8221. Every time they have fixed it right the first time. They do everything from oil changes to engine swap/rebuilds. The only problem is they are only open Mon-Fri 8-6. Check them out at www.cfar.net

depending on what is the max to be spent, you cant go wrong with a ew Accel unit...from Summit Racing or ur favorite race parts store.... By the time you end up spendingthe money for a reman opti base, then buying the cap and rotor, you will have pretty much spent about what an Accel costs.. and as far as buying a new GM one, id rather spend the money on a MSD.... But if cost is a factor, you can find some decent ones on Ebay now and then.. HOpe this helps...... Oh and you def. need a vented one... 92-94 non vented.... 95-97 vented.... vented caps will fit the 92-94 opti's ,but to make it work right you would have to drill a small hole ,and press a small vaccume hose sized nipple into the housing, then you could make ur own vented style.... just some info.. Hope it help ya..

Thanks for the input guys. He already has it in a shop somewhere. I forwarded him a link to this thread. Don't know if he took maverick's advice on a location or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but doesn't the "vented" opti have a different timing cover? And I'm pretty sure you need a longer dowel on the end of the cam shaft. Just blogging out loud

Hi, I'm the BIL, thanks for all the advice, I had it in the shop (A+ Auto) before I looked at this board. The car is running great now. I will be sure to check here before I do anything else tho.
