Need help, huge problem with the Civic....

Ok, I thought I was making it up for a while, but I knew I was smelling gas when i was driving the civic around. Usually after I stopped and shut the car off. Well this afternoon I'm over at my mom's house, been driving the bike for the last 2 days so theHonda's been sitting at her house, and I'm standing next to the Honda and I smell gas. I'm walking around it and see that gas is leaking out the fuel door! I open it up and gas is just seeping out of the fuel fill tube, and the cap is on tight. I take the cap off, a little more gas comes out then it sounds like the tank let out a bunch of air. I'm guessing that somehow the gas tank is building up pressure and pusing gas out the fill tube. The tank is almost full right now, but I've smelled gas before when I know the tank wasn't full. So what the heck can I do? I know next to nothing about this car, and pretty much nothing about gas tanks in general. Is there something I can do? Would just putting the cap on loose help? Hopefully someone can give me some advise cause I'm scared to drive the car now.

I know in my Camaro everytime I fill up with gas and I unscrew the cap, air purges out. I figured it was normal. I don't have any problems with the car or loss of gas, that I know of.

check out the Evap cannister & your vent hoses. there should be a vacuum hose diagram under the hood, or get a Chiltons.
sounds like the Fuel system is over pressurizing or not venting properly.
the FPR should have a return system & you should be able to nuke that out with a Chiltons.
a buddy had an old car (with the wrong gas tank and no rear deck) that would squirt gas up to the front seat when it was hot in the summer.

It's always had pressure in there when I removed the cap to refill it. Maybe the cap is bad and not letting the pressure bleed off.
As for the vacuum diagram, Good luck. It's under the hood. I know they were all on right. It took me forever to get them right but I finally did. The diagram is like reading a bowl of spaghetti.
I can't think of any reason why the gas would flow up the filler tube. But when I parked it in 1996 It had a full tank of gas. It was bone dry in 1999 when I started driving it again. I thought somebody had just sucked the gas out of the tank. But maybe not. It does have a locking filler door after all. There must be a vent tube plugged or the cap is bad. Let me know if you want my help.
I'll see if I still have the Haynes manual. But I think you have it right?

Chuck - thanks, yeah you already gave me the haynes manuel for the car. I'm gonna look at it today and see what I can do. If anything maybe I can just keep the cap on a little loose or something. I'll figure it out either way. If I need any help though I'll let you know.
Thanks for the pointers guys! Hopefully I'll get it worked out today.

Hey Mike...
I've heard of this on lots of cars..my suggestion would just be to unscrew the gas gap and then re-screw it occasionally just to make sure theres no leftover pressure in there. Once you do that for awhile you'll know approx. how long you can wait before releasing pressure again...might only have to do it after a fillup once a few hours later then not again until the next fillup.
