Inland areas are rundown all along the US1 corridor. The beach areas are loaded with old retirees that complain about everything and think they are so much better than everyone else.
There has been no substainsial new growth in the area like in Melbourne and Palm Bay or even in Ft Pierce. The citrus industry has stalled.
I aint running down your city, but I have lived right up the road all my life here in the Palm Bay/Satellite Beach areas and work for a company that serves Vero.
When I was in high school it was funny to run track meets down there. I was the only white guy in the 100 yd sprint heats. Back in the late 70s early 80s there was a guy that went to Vero High named Lavern Williams that was a sprinter who had a suposed 9.5 time. My best was a 9.9 and he and I would have run each other but he fouled out. He was a good guy though. We beat on each other on the football field too.
The city of Vero really needs to work on its image and get some of its areas out of the 1950s.

There isnt a real good job market in Vero. Up here in the Melbourne area its much better. Mostly an out growth of the tech fields. There are alot of government contractors and tech companies in the area. Nokia just built a facility recently but I hear they are having trouble. Harris Corp has been here forever.
What do you do? We need people like there is no ones biz.
Construction is at a all time high. Home prices are on the rise but still better than Orlando and south Florida. You can buy a real nice home in the Palm Bay area in 100k range and 150K over on the beach. The Cape Canaveral area is alright but Titusville sucks and they have a high crime rate. Many Cape employees drive the 35 miles from Melbourne and Palm Bay to live in a better area.
South of Vero home prices start to really jump. Stuart, Hobe Sound, Palm Beach are building many exclusive sub-divisions. 300K in many of them to start for a house. The job market down there isnt the best either. Mostly retirees and people with money who own their own bisinesses.
Florida is great. Just if you come, I'll give you the same advice I give anyone coming here. Come to Florida and enjoy it as it is. If thong bikinis, 4x4 trucks, and aligators bother you? Dont come.
Nothing worse than someone moving here and bitching about everything that makes Florida what it is and what it has been.
If you like to surf, fish, ride ATVs, hunt some, like the outdoors, and can stand the heat? Come on down and lets party.

Melbourne, Palm Bay aint bad. I tried for years to leave and always something came up. Dad died and that left mom alone and then she got sick a few years later and passed. I got married and now divorcing so its like just everyone else I guess. Life.
But its really a good area. Crime is up and down. Goes with the economy. Businesses dont pay as well as many up north and that aggravates many new comers. But a 2000 square ft house can be had for 100K. Not 300K like many areas of NY or NJ.
I have friends who work for cities and county. They seem to be the type of jobs where it helps to know someone. Plus they arent the best paying of jobs.
I work for Waste Management and we need drivers, welders, fabricators, mechanics so bad that we have started to farm out lots of work. I've been here 8.5 years now and like it alot. I'am the parts manager and purchasing agent for the company.
We are right on the east coast so you think it would be easy to find folks to come here to live and work, but many just come here to retire. We have Patrick AFB right on the beach. They just built a new VA hospital in Melbourne. Traffic is getting bad, but its bad everywhere in Florida except north Florida.
North Florida is nice if you like more of a country atmosphere. Jobs are scarce there though.
Good luck if you come down. We have a small informal car club here in Melbourne called Space Coast Muscle Cars. We meet once a week in Melbourne and do a road trip about once a month to Orlando. Cars are big here. There are Vette clubs and street rod clubs. There are three good tracks within driving distance.
When do you plan to come down?

well im going down for vacation on november 21st, but not sure when we are moving down, i need to sell my house here in connecticut first, then i can make the big change....ill be honest i cant wait to move down there i love it and just want to get away from the rat race, and the craziness the running around,i want to start enjoying life, and want my kids to enjoy it as well, i think it would be great for them too, the winters are ok but i am starting to not enjoy it any more, i have to be out the minute it starts snowing, you have to deal with people on the road that should not be out..........man im getting depressed just thinking about it, just not looking forward to the cold/snow.........hows waste management to work at pretty good, drivers get good pay rate, i understand that i would be taking a pay cut, but i can deal with it.......i have my cdl, so this is a bonus i guess, ill be looking for work once i get down there too, let me know if you hear of anything.........thanks

I think Waste Management is a good company. Its had its ups and downs like all companies in the last couple of years. We have scandle, mergers, and a couple of layoffs in the managment ranks.
Drivers seem to make good money. 30K to 40K is not unreasonable. More in the commercial trucks. Most of the trucks are automatics now and most have airconditioning and stereos.
Mechanics are paid by experience and ASE certs. Welders kind of the same.
No one is starving. Just look at the nice cars in the parking lot.
The drivers unionized a few years ago, but you dont have to join. The mechanics are not union.
You seem to be coming for the same reason my parents came in 1970. Dad got tired of shoveling snow and having his knees swell in the winter. We were from Washington DC. I've lived here since I was 7 years old and really like it. I liked it as a kid too. We lived right on the beach.
Good enough weather to take the cars out all year is a big thing for me as well. We go four wheeling on the weekends alot too.
The area has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 30 some years, but its not wall to wall people like Ft Lauderdale or Orlando. Yet.

Its not real hard. Fill out application, go through the hoops. Drug test, driving test, back ground check.
Yes I'm in Melbourne. West Melbourne to be exact. We are about 30 miles North of Vero and about 30 miles south of the Cape. Not too far from I95. There are tons of hotels in the area if you wanted to stop by for a day and look around the area.

All the hot spots are in Orlando, but West Palm Beach is a real nice area to live in. Enjoy it here.

I'll be moving away soon myself. I'm done with Florida.

Good luck on your move.

Well Melbourne used to be called Melboring years ago, but its gotten better. The people are mixed. Lots of retirees. Quite a few younger families looking for the same thing you are. We are within an hours drive from Orlando and the attractions. Some diverisity. Mainly hispanics. We have a fairly large black community. Never really been any race trouble here though. Most people get along pretty good.
Beach side is alittle more upscale nowadays. Most cities really cracking down on code enforcement. Just dont keep tons of crap around the house and you should not have any problems.
Its quite family oriented I would say. Not too many strip clubs and that sort of thing. A few, but the are somewhat upscale compared to years ago.
Crime isnt bad. Mostly property crime and drugs. Just like anywhere. Cops are decent for the most part. Some are dicks and others are real good dudes.
Too many zero lot line sub-divisions going in in my opinion. Houses too close together. Those are usualy very deed restricted.
Every type of church in the world has a place here. There must be 75 churches in the area.
Did I say cars are big here.
The weather is pretty good. Rains alot in the summer at the end of the day mostly.
Lots of car shows and racing all year.
November 22 and 23 is the Turkey Rod Run in the Daytona speedway. Its about 80 milesnorth of here. Its huge.
Decent schools and lots of homeschool groups. My girlfriend is a administrator for one of the homeschool groups. She has a teaching degree.
The best priced homes are in Palm Bay just south of Melbourne.
Melbourne/ Palm Bay /Veiara/Beaches are so close together that if you speak of one you are speaking of the others too, but Palm Bay has the most house for the money.
Used to be tons of street racing but its kind of tapered off alittle. I quit street racing a long time ago.
The track in Orlando is about an hours tow from here. The track in West Palm Beach is about an hour and half to two hours tow. Gainsville is a drive though. Three to four hours tow. Bradenton is about two hours from here. All those tracks are pretty good. Gainsville is the best because they host the Gator Nationals.
I'm heading to the car club cruise night now so I'll be off for awhile. Talk at you later.
