honda CRX cuts his car in half using a concrete light poll

was just on WESH channel 2, street racing accident, a seemly riced out honda CRX was racing some other car in the same area as an elementary school that was letting out when he lost control and slid into a poll... literally, his car is in 2 seperate pieces about 15 feet away from eachother. his engine was all dressed up and from the quick clip i saw he had at least CAI and some aftermarket wires and lots of chrome under the hood.

i *think* they said the driver was 17... and he prolly won't survive.

crash happened south of the airport in a residential looking area. florida highway patrol looked to be the dominate force there.

i'd bet money that there will be a crapload more crackdowns on street racing again... similar to after the last huge one where the kid in his new 5.0 killed his mom

Y'all remember ... racing is hazardous and needs to be taken very seriously at all times. Even on a sanctioned track. I have seen quite a few mishaps out at OSW in Bithlo and was even there the night a good friend of mine from my dragbike days was killed. The guy he was racing had a problem and lost control just before the finish line. He crossed over into my friends lane and they both went down at over 130 MPH.

I have also seen several street cars lose traction on the 1-2 shift and hit the guardrail or cross over into the outer guys lane (either in front of or behind the other car), even watched a Viper spin sideways and smack the opposite lanes guardrail at mid-track. Totaled the Viper into small pieces.

Just be careful and do not forget that what you are driving is a serious machine capable of great fun as well as great danger.

i myself have almost done this once when they let us run in the rain. scarry as hell, and i'll never race even when its drizzling anymore. if i'm up at the front of the staging lines and its my turn and its sprinkling, i'll just pull off onto the side and let the next guy run.

Yeah bithlo, nothign like a guy in a late 70s Monte Carlo practice his launches in the staging lanes with an empty case of beer in the passenger side.

Or even better crazy hispanic people torching a nitrous bottle in the staging lanes to get the pressure up.

I have seen some peopel spining down the track after they lost control, hell I got my car kinda sideways and goofy, in my 2nd to 3rd shift, which would be great IF MY CAR HAD POWER, I can only do that in the rain, and even then I have to be trying to break them loose not jsut let it run. Gotta love the track prep.

What it comes down to is that all racing is dangerous. At least at the track you are only endangering other people that know the risk. On the street you are endangering people that are not there to race but to go about daily life.

Dont get me wrong, I would be the first to go for it, just remember it is dangerous. This is the reason I sold my TA and also the reason I picked a car with traction control this time. I stomped it, when it did not look wet but was, and lost it at over 70mph and luckily only damaged my pride and ripped off my exhaust. It did tweak the rear quaters but it was only noticeable if I showed you. Scared the HELL out of me. So much so that I sold all the performance parts and bought a Land Rover. Then after many months of healing, well a couple weeks of driving the LR anyway, I was ready for another one.

So what am I saying?? I dont know. I dont think you ever outgrow it. That feeling of accelerating that hard, or hitting a corner at speed. What a rush!!!

Just be careful. Fbody s dont hold up too well to high speed crashes.

I still can't get over the hispanic guy who was torching the nitrous bottle, but how about the 5.0 stang guy who hit the nitrous at idle and the solenoid stuck in the staging lanes.... that was pretty scary... big blue flame shooting out of the carb with the car in the middle lane with nowhere to go... never seen people move cars so creatively in my whole life... Lucky no one was hurt but the REALLY scary part is after the fire was out they let him race!

thats in sane, once back in high school at morrosso i saw a guy blow a wheel off his car at the launch, spi to the left and wipe out the tree, bet that scared the staging guy.

Course on a street race i saw, guy had a nitroused civic, that almost took off at the line with it still in reverse, didn't the shifter feel out of place?

whole crowd started yelling at him and he put it back in first.

If you ever get a chance to drive a civic or integra, you will notice that sometimes its hard to feel that gear you are in. I know there is a definate diference between 1st and Reverse, but others are hard to tell sometimes. The shifters in the accords and preludes feel like they are in place. I like the way the feel A LOT better.

And its not jsut for Civics and integras, I've gotten into alot of cars that feel like that. I hate the way they are. Some times it feel like the shifter will break if you shift too hard. I noticed this mainly in FWD cars.

Speaking of Nitrous explosions. I used to work the starting line at a drag strip in California (Antelope Valley now OCIR in Palmdale). I had to shut down a pair of cars while another car cleared the track at the high end and we checked for oil down. Nitrous was pretty new back then (late 70's) and the system were still a little black magic. Anyway, one guy was running nitrous and had a leaky nitrous solenoid. While he sat there during the shutdown nitrous was leaking into his intake manifold. When I had them crank 'em up his motor exploded violently and sent his fiberglass hood about 50 feet into the air along with various intake and carb parts. I was standing about 10 feet away and thought I had been shot. Nobody get hit with anything but it sure got everybodies attention.

Needless to say I hate when people torch the nitrous bottle, especially if they are parked near my car (I walk away immediately when I see this going on) since I don't want my car hit by flying parts.

the only street-related incident near where i live was last may when 7 people crammed into an 02 Civic (all riced out) and was heading home from Melbourne going 100+mph and a car got onto I-95 so they swerved out of the way and flipped 3-6times... KILLING EVERYONE... and they all went to either Vero Beach High School (my school) or Sebastian River High School.... (i think 4 went to Vero-my school)
