Post going to OSW tomarrow... got any tips?

my friend with a 400ci el camino is going to be going to the track tomarrow and invited me to go along since i've never been before and to run the z for the first time. its 99% stock except for CAI so i'm not expecting much.

what do other near stock LT1's run at OSW in this heat? do you got any tips for a novice first timer?

the car is an a4 with stock 3.23's and street tires with plenty of tread.

My car's best time was like a 14.10 100% stock... Now a 13.80 with a couple cheap things done, on street tires. I have 125k miles, and it runs real strong for the mileage. I've seen them run anywhere from mid to low 14's about the average. I haven't been out there in a few months, might go next wednesday though.

But dont feel bad if you pull a 15.0 or something the first time out. You have to hook up with it. You must get the 60 foot time down if you want a decent time.

It takes practice to get it right.

Good Luck
Steve

I'm going to attempt to go tomm as well. My stock 94Z,A4,3:23 rear ran a 13.8 with nittos, a passenger (150 lbs) and a miss. This was in 78 -80 degrees temps though. Since than I have replaced wires and added a lt4KM. & a jet fan switch I have a CAI,tb bypass, air foil & 160 stat. Thats it.

Hey anasazi,

I wouldn't worry too much about ETs in this heat. I've seen 5 tenths on my car between crappy days and excellent weather days.

Just concentrate on your take-offs. That's the most critical part of the run. The rest will take care of itself.

Tip for going to track tomorrow ... DON'T

Lousy weather, track prep will be marginal since the rain "cleans" the track and for the most part all you really stand to do is beat on your car and feel frustrated that your times suck.

Of course that's just my .02

Hey ... I don't want to throw a wet blanket on things. You just might want to find another place to hang with your car buddies (Hooters comes to mind) and spend your cash. waiting around in the heat and humidity while ricers whine down the track and then your runs suck due to poor traction and the weatherusually just pisses you off. why not get together in a nice cool Hooters, enjoy the view, do some bench racing, enjoy the view, bench race, enjoy the view.... you get the idea (of yeah ... eat some wings too)

I plan to be out with some friends chomping on some Pizza or someting like that. of course I'll also be enjoying the view since I am a typical dirty ol' man with a fast car.

Later .... Larry S.

Might make it to Apopka S&S Saturday if I can get into the car.

unfortunantly most of my friends are in the "if it costs money, i don't wanna do it" category so tonight i might just go to OSW cause i've got nothing else to do. afterwords i'll probably just go cruising with the g/f or something, i'm not sure.

at the very least i guess i'll be able to see what the latest rice trend is...

does OSW have any safety or other requirements? i've heard they require long pants but i wasn't sure if that was true or not.

Yes, you should be wearing long pants if you go.

If you just want to go to see what its like thats fine but dont be suprised if you run alot slower than you figured you would. Its just too dang hot...

well i went, and it was pretty fun till the end.

first it looked like it was going to storm, so they didn't let people race till about 7pm.

there wasn't too many people there till about 8 or so, then it got pretty crowded.

i got 5 runs in, my very first run i was put up against a brand new LS1 SS ... needless to say my 15.764 to his 14.146 was pretty bad on all counts, but damn did i smoke up the stands... couldn't see much cause of the burnout . this is when i learned that just punching it is bad.

raced a 240sx (or something) ... beat him off the line, then suddenly his turbos spun up and he went buh bye.

forgot to turn the air conditioner off on a run, ran a 15.5xxx

my best two runs were my last two, and the very best was the last one - 14.432.

i think i did pretty decent for the heat and having a passenger in the car every run, and for just basically babying it for the first few feet then punching it, so crappy launches.

the SS dude said his best for tonight was 13.6 and he's been a few times, so i thought my novice 14.4 with a passenger and crappy launches wasn't too terrible, especially for a STOCK LT1 ...

one thing that amazed me though was all the rice. some of them could really back themselves up, like an S2000 that whooped the **** out of a showcar corvette with a nice paint job. there were a few turbo'ed or SC'ed civics as well. i was happy that they had spent all these thousands of dollars on modifications when all i had to do was buy a stock camaro and i wasn't too far off from them on my first runs ever... made me smile.

at the end something happened on the track and they shut it down for an hour and a half. it was horrible, everyone was stuck in the staging lanes while they cleaned up the track down near the time boards.

alright i'm tired, i'm going to bed.

Unhappy

I was heading out at about 6:45 pm and than the fog & rain sent me back. I'm going to wait for all of this wet heat to subside and retain the need to go until cooler drier nights prevail.
