Red face Could that be right?

I picked up the Z28 from the shop the other day (had a new starter put in) and the guy who did the work said he noticed my differentials were getting pretty loud. He had a firebird a few months ago but had to sell it before starting law school. Well either way he said that the same thing happened to his car and he ended up having to get a new set. Since he's a mechanic he got a deal on the set for about $1200 and had a friend do the work for about $200. Does that sound right? I do have a loud interior noise and it's not the exhaust. It sounds like gears rotating, like if i'm inside the transmission or something like that. The rotating noise is coming from beneath my back seats and gets louder with my speed and lower when i go slower.
Is this a problem i should be worried about or is this guy just jumping the gun to try to juice me for money?

Um, well the differential doesn't cost anywhere NEAR $1200...the gears usually run like $420 I think for GM Motive gears. He's full of **** about the price...not sure about the noise, could be the differential.

GM Motive gears are roughtly $170-$200
and a really good Eaton posi runs ~$400 Labor would be about $250 to install them both.

For $1200 you could replace every part in the rearend and then some.

That's what i was thinking also.......i did think that was a bit excessive, but wasn't sure.

So should i look into getting an aluminum driveshaft and new gears?

$1200

aren't 12 bolt rear ends like $1270?

if you got the money do it but if you wanna go the really cheap route I got a used lt1 rear axle for $408 shipped to Orlando. included brakes, and brake lines for direct bolt in.

Depending on the last time you had changed the rearend fluid ... you might change the rearend fluid and find the noise goes away. If you have a 6-speed also check/change the fluid level in there. Could also be a u-joint drying up and rumbling.

For $1200 you could replace the entire rear including labor. He got ripped off if he was telling the truth. Not only that, if he is a mechanic why did he pay a friend to do the work???

That guy works at like a Mobil or something off University right? He borrowed tools from us in the junkyard one day, said he would give me a free oil change. He did, he is a relly nice guy but did seem to get screwed a lot on parts for his car. He said he paid like over $100 for a fuel filter.

Yea that's him, he's a cool guy no doubt, but like i said that sounded a little excessive. Oh well, i'll see what i do, hold out and save some money to see what's really the problem. Thanks for all the responses!
