Chill out
no you don't need one....
the lower stat will keep your car runing cooler in everyday driving. however to take advantage of it in places like heavy city traffic or at the track (sitting in staging lanes) you need either a fan switch or to reprogram the fan settings.
it is a common myth that keeps propagating that the 160 stat is useless without a switch or reprogram...and it's totally NOT true.
my 96lt1 use to stay just above the 160 line oon the guage even around town, not untill i was sitting in heavy traffic did it go up (obviously).
it's a great mod, speically since it's cheap and effectve

fan switch was one of the best things i did to my car. i have a jet stage 2 in my car and a 160* stat, but sitting in traffic it still heats up to 210* or higher. the fan cools it off so quick, and also avoids the engine from getting hot if you turn it on when you first hit traffic. i highly recommend it especially w/ this heat appraoching.
advance makes an elec thermo switch, set it to your temp by your dash gauge.
we put one on the 93 last weekend, the PCM quit turning the fans on.
its $19, in the RV and towing section.
we put the sensor tip in the motor end of the driver side radiator hose, put switch under the hood holder thing (there's holes already, kinda hides it) and grounded it to the screw we used to mount it.
take the bottom off the fuse box, and splice into the thin blue wire for the secondary fan relay, (the PCM provides a ground to turn on the relay to power the fans)
let it idle, burp the two bleed screws (one under TB) and adjust to your desire.
this mod uses all the OEM wiring and fuses to provide the most protectoin, and puts the least wires in your car.
at the race track, you just turn it down all the way, and leave the key on to run it.
if you are having probs, you should first short the ALDL to determine if the OEM wiring is right, to make the fans run
