I THINK i might be VERY lucky

Ok, heres the story. I was going home from work tonight and this trans am pulls up next to me. we were both going about 35 or 40 or so and he hits it, and i think what the h***, and i hit it. I missed a gear and popped it into 1st, let out the clutch and it revs like mad. It jumped up past the redline(not sure how far). When i saw this i popped in the clutch really quick and put it in 3rd. I thought for sure that i messed up something, but nothings different. It didnt shut off the fuel, so i dont think i hit the rev limiter. It doesnt make any weird noises or anything. Did i just get lucky, or could it of messed something up? I heard that you can bend the pushrods if u over rev it but it didnt shut off the fuel. Am i OK? (I AM STILL NEW TO THE M6, i think i will take it easy till i get the hang of it)

ls-1's are usually the victoms of the bent pushrod on the ol' first-second-first powershifts. Its weird that it didnt hit the limiter if it did go past 6k. but you may be very lucky indeed. just learn from it

when it hits the rev limiter does it shut down the car completely, or just until the revs go down? Also, how can you tell if you bent the pushrods.

when you hit the rev limiter, you will know. The revs go to what, 5700 or so (I think thats what it is set at stock so correct me if Im wrong) and it will hit that and make real loud "POP"s and stay within a few hundred revs. When you hit it you will automatically let off the gas and go "what the hell was that?"

well, i think i heard something, but i thought it was the guy next to me scratching. So it does shut down the car? Maybe i did hit it. If thats the case, how can i tell if i have bent pushrods?

The rev limiter will not keep you from mechanically over revving the engine (like when you drop back to a lower gear by mistake).

So, how do i know if i messed up anything. Im so pissed that i did this. I think i caught it quick enough that it didnt do anything, but i dont know. Even if i over revved it to much mechanically, it still would have shut off the engine right?

If it was the drivetrain that was actually causing the over rev condition, there is nothing the pcm can do to stop it. The pcm could kill the fuel, but that may not be what was driving the revs up, see?

If you you don't feel any roughness at idle or through the rpm range, chances are you did not bend a pushrod or cause other damage. The LT1 is more forgiving than the LS1 in this matter.

i know that it wouldnt keep it from over revving, im just curious 1. If i over revved it and 2. how much, and 3. If i screwed anything up. I was just asking if the engine would have shut down from mechanically over revving it. i might of actually caught it soon enough, but it sounded like it revved REALLY high. BTW, it idles as smooth as ever and pulls hard still. I think im ok, but i was just really nervous because i dont know how to fix this stuff and i would be dishing out a lot to get it fixed. Thanks for your help.

also, what can over revving do besides bend a push rod. again thanks.

If you're running smooth, you are probably ok. When you start bending stuff, things have a habit of getting in the way of other things and that can end up with lots of busted parts. Not very technical, but you get the picture.

Some things can only rotate so fast before they come apart.

Overrevving could do a ton of things depending on parts in motor, etc.
Im not trying to ask if i do this what will happen, because i have already done it. I am just very paranoid and trying to find out what i might have f***ed up. I dont THINK i did because i have a smooth idle and no weird noises. So i PRAY that i am ok.

The engine does not shut off persay. It just cuts fuel until you get under the rev limit and it continues running.
