Okay so I just purchased a 94 z28 and I want to change out the sensors on the engine to prevent being stuck on the side of the road because of it. Can anyone recommend which ones are POSITIVELY NEEDED FIRST?

 

There is no real need to change anything that is currently working IMHO. You can't predict a sensor's life cycle.

 

True but the peace of mind would be nice knowing they are all new. Pretty much any sensor that would go bad and leave me sitting on the side of the road especially when in have my daughter with me.

The only sensors that can really go bad and leave you stranded are the ones in the opti. The car will still run (although badly) with other bad sensors. In this case it really is better to stick with the devil you know. Replacing sensors without cause generally leads to more problems than it solves.

If you really want to be proactive then invest in a tuning cable and download Datamaster. Then you can do a base scan that you can use later for comparison when something does go wrong.

Yeah I sent a post about the scan9495. I've never read any type of automotive software before so I'd prefer the most user friendly one. Any good write ups on how to build your own cable?

I use the cable from Tunercat. It's probably not the cheapest, but I know it works on Scan9495, Datamaster and Tunercats. You need the 12 pin connector for a 94. http://tunercat.com/

as noted replacing sensors without a specific problem is not advised. One exception would be 02 sensors if they have more than 50k miles on them...but old/lazy 02's won't leave you stranded somewhere.

like any car properly maintained, tune up (plugs, wires, PCV etc), check for any worn, brittle vacuum hoses/fittings, cooling system service (new coolant and hoses), transmission and diff fluid change are advised.

Given Opti problems can suddenly leave you stranded and buying a "good" Opti (AC Delco or Delphi) may not be immediately available when the need strikes. Purchasing a new Delphi from someplace like rockauto.com ($275ish) may be prudent so you have one available when you need it vs buying a China clone from a auto part store.
