Plugging the EGR tubing

I have a 94 z28 and have read several threads about plugging the EGR but just want to be sure. After capping the headers do I need to plug the two corresponding hoses and also block off the tubing from the intake manifold. Also, do I need to remove anything if I am replacing the optispark cap or it can be done without removing any other part. Thank you

Re: Plugging the EGR tubing

There is a single EGR corrugated metal tube, running from #8 primary to the back of the intake manifold. The hole in the header has to be covered with a blanking plate, and it's a good idea to cover the hole on the back of the manifold with a blanking plate. If you remove the EGR valve itself, that hole has to be covered with a blanking plate. Ready made sets of plates are available, or you can make your own. Remove the vacuum line from the driver's side of the intake manifold and put a vacuum cap on the nipple.

When you speak of "hoses", are you possibly confusing the AIR system with the EGR system?

By removing the EGR system, you have done little more than eliminate a system that has no effect on performance when working properly, and can actually help reduce detonation when lugging the engine at low RPM.

Re: Plugging the EGR tubing

You are right I am talking about the AIR system rather than EGR. Sorry about that. So if I cap the headers with the metallic plugs I must also plug the corresponding hoses up. And I guess the other metalic hose that I took off to remove the old exhaust manifold is part of the EGR . Putting that back on the headers should be ok? Thanks Also the optispark cap , can I remove it and replace it along with the rotor without removing other major parts. Thanks again.

I am capping the headers because I broke the AIR tube that is located on the passenger side and can't find a replacement. Dealer said it's discontinued. I would rather leave it like it was if I can find the part.

Re: Plugging the EGR tubing

There has to be tons of used parts that people took off their cars (since people are always removing the smog stuff). Try a post in the parts wanted forum.

You will need to remove the water pump to get to the opti.
