Rotor and brake squeak need fix

I just replaced my front rotors with drilled rotors on my 1994 z28 camaro, and it makes a horrible squeak that is rather annoying. It gets worse as the wheels heat up but it goes away when I step on the brakes. Is it because I cleaned the rotors and the brake pads are dirty. Im hoping that it will just ride out but is there anything i can do in the meantime. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks guys

Did you use anti-squeal compound on the back of the brake pad backing plates?

Re: Rotor and brake squeak need fix

I always replace the pads when the rotors are bad. They recommend careful driving for the first 150 miles after replacing them. Auto parts stores sell a cheap packet of the anti squeel as mentioned and its around a $1 or $2. I usually drive with the brake on a little and the gas on more when my pads are dirty, to clean them.

I guess I just assumed you had replaced the pads at the same time - as noted above, generally a good idea.

Re: Rotor and brake squeak need fix

Its recommended to clean the rotors with brake cleaner first and they say if you get brake fluid on the pads that it will ruin them. Using old pads causes the brand new rotors to wear only where the groves were from the old pads. Kinda of premature wear. I put new rotors and pads on and drove several days before noticing any wear at all. I also hear that the cheap "chinese or Ebay" rotors that are drilled after are prone to cracking and not a good investment. I had a set years ago and they started to look like they were going to fall to pieces. To the point of being dangerous! They should work themselves out over time if you installed correctly and do new pads also.

Re: Rotor and brake squeak need fix

Pads take about 10minutes of "burnishing" they technically call it to break in. I let them break in for about a 30min trip before I start to get on them more, but it doesn't take 150 miles......O_o
Brakes should be matched with new pads, or you can cause a big difference in surface patterns interacting, causing excessive vibration which turns into that annoying squeak as you call it. Were they cheap rotors?

Re: Rotor and brake squeak need fix

Just reading the instructions (heavy braking should be avoided for the first 150 miles after fitting to allow for a bedding-in period for the brakes) on the new rotors. The trick is to not go out and do 100-0 right after installing and give them there "breaking in" period. I could not believe after 2 days of driving the rotors still had that brand new look. I bought the best so maybe thats it and the first time I ever read the instructions.

Re: Rotor and brake squeak need fix

Perhaps you are referring to performance brake parts, while I am referring to typical OEM brakes? I never had to wait 150 miles....that's just insanely long, especially when you drive majorly in city circumstances. Most of my trips in that circumstance are about 3-5miles total, with about 10 stop lights.

Definitely don't go out right away and "test" them very harshly once they are installed.....will glaze the **** out of everything LOL = trashed components now.
