car will not start

Ok everyone I'm new to this any info will be helpful and constructive criticism is always welcome anyways on to my problem I'm going to give as much info on my problem as I can it started about 6 months ago I had a terrible misfire problem it was the usual water pump leaking on the opti problem well I got that fixed and still had a misfire but nowhere near as bad I figured it was the plug wires I was low on money hence the reason I didn't just do thos at the same time as the opti and water pump. So I replaced my wires hoping my problem would finally be gone but surprise it was still there. Now here a month or so ago I replaced my plugs finally again I could tell a huge difference and my problem went away temporarily. A few days later my problem came back this time I could feel a misfire at idle it would bounce around between 600 and 900 rpms and when I would accelerate normally it would stutter a little but not too bad the problem was at WOT it would stall out and lose power I also could hear a popping from the engine and it was also backfiring it just got worse which I pretty much expected. It finally gave out on me a few days ago it was about 95-100 degrees outside it also seemed worse the hotter it was outside but I think that was just my mind lol anyways I was driving home from the mall and it started up ok but had the usual misfire at idle as soon as I got on the highway I opened it up to about 3/4 throttle and it died for a second (or it seemed like it died) the rpms came back up but when I tried to stay in throttle it had nothing it popped and backfired but it acted like I wasn't even pressing the pedal down it finally got power and as soon as I got off the highway I came to a stoplight and as soon as I got in the throttle it got enough power to get rolling and did the same thing it did when I got on the highway well I was able to get it to a gas station and it sat there for a week because it wouldn't start I would start it and it would immediately die I also tried to start it and keep the rpms up as long as I was giving it about 2 or 3 grand it would stay started but as soon as I let off the throttle it would die. A couple days ago I got it towed to the house where it sits right now there are so many things it could be I'm just not sure where the best place to start would be as I said before any help is useful and I hope I've given enough info. Oh and the car is a 96 z28 with a cai and exhaust

So to summarize, you changed opti, water pump, plugs and wires and still have the same problem. Yes?

Time now to look at fuel pressure if I have the others listed correctly. When was the last time it had a new fuel filter? Much less any of the rest of a tune up.

I haven't changed the fuel filter out yet reason being is I figure it could be the coil I've also had people say it could be the tps or maybe even the fuel pump but I will start by changing the fuel filter

But you've been having problems for 6 months - at some time you must have pulled the codes.

Try and start it, and then pull the codes.

Since you have several ways to go, I always suggest you travel the road of testing not merely replacing. Testing can be low if not "no" cost. Throwing parts at is never the right way to go.

I seriously doubt a fuel filter would be that clogged to cause the problem and I merely brought it up to give you some thought regarding a full tune up.

With regard to the "tune up". 2 things that are recommended to replace on a regular basis but are usually over looked are coils and O2's. Coils will regularly breakdown at the coil body and allow current to escape by way of a spark to the laminations around it. You may see sparks at night near it or notice little white spots on outside of the windings.

O2's should also be replaced as well but you will know if they were the problem from start up. Since the engine doesn't even use them till it gets up to temperature. If your engine runs crappy from dead cold, that's an indication that at least one other things is bad.

Also, you would expect a 300 code for misfires if you have a misfire. The engine is monitoring for that. Or I should say the PCM is monitoring for that.

The coil is on the front of the head on the driver's side.

Here's a link to a website with basic info about the LT1 F-Bodys. While most of the material is for a 95, there are not a lot of differences with your 96. In many cases, Shoebox has pointed out the differences in the photo, schematic, how to, etc.

alright latest update i went outside and started tinkering with the car i took off the intake elbow, maf, disconnected the maf of course, and the rest of the intake then i disconnected the coil checked the coil out seemed to be fine i dont have a meter so i was unable to test it but it looked ok thats not to say it isnt the problem but i dont believe that its the problem because i reconnected the coil and left all of the intake components off started up the car and it was fine it idled fine i put it through the gears and i still had no problems so what i thought was maybe the wire on the coil had become disconnected or was loose and that my problem was fixed well i put everything back together started the car and had the same problem ive been having now im extremely confused as to what it might be but im guessing it would have to be a problem with the intake somewhere
