99 Z28 5 star rims
99 Z28 5 star rims
I just pick up a set of 5 star 16" rims that came off a 1999 Z28 for my 1994 Formula. The fronts bolted on fine but the back seemed not to fit just right. Like the hub hole was a little smaller on the rim. It looked to be just a hair smaller. Has anyone had these problems? I'm thinking of using a drummel and opening it up a little.
Moved to the Wheel and Tire forum.
I think if you do a search in this forum, you'll find the answer you're looking for. If I remember correctly (and I know Fred will remember), there is a slight difference, and you can fix it by getting a set of LS1 hubs, which will bolt right up.
Personally, I don't recommend taking a Dremel to your wheels, ever. Terrible idea.

Here's the answer I was talking about:

Fred seems to have no issue with grinding down the holes, and I trust him, so I say go for it.

Lightly sand or grind the inner diameter of the holes in the wheels so they will fit over the rear hubs with no interference.
This is a common problem from 1993-1996, but this is the first time I have heard of it being a problem on a 1997. Yes, in the 93-96 cars the rear hub is slightly larger in diameter than the front hub. But the wheels are made (at least 94-96) with larger holes so they will fit in either position. The problem was supplosedly fixed in late 96 or early 97. The rear hubs were made smaller to match the front hubs, and the holes in the back of the wheels were made smaller.
The only people I have heard of having a problem are people buying a set of 97+ wheels and trying to put them on a 93-96 car. In that case, you have to sand or grind the inner diameter of the holes in the wheels so they will fit over the rear hubs.

Its covered on the Wheels and Tires FAQ, Shoebox has it on his site, Rob and I have posted the info numerous times over the past 10+ years.
The amount of grinding is extremely small. We're talking the thickness of a couple sheets of paper. You will not hurt anything, as long as you don't use some sort of Neanderthal tools and techniques.

I put a set of ZR1's from a 98 SS on my '94 Z28 I had a few years back and I had to grind out just a little bit inside the wheel where it fits over the hub. It was very little though, not enough to hurt the wheel what so ever.
