timing cover install

i will try my best to make this as clear as possible. the rubber pan gasket that fits into the slot on the bottom of the timing cover, is the whole gasket supposed to sit in that slot, or only half? I got half of it in there easily with the pan dropped, seems nearly impossible to get the whole gasket in there, thats why i was wondering if i was doing it wrong.

The gasket protrudes from the timing chain cover. Once the oil pan is put in place and bolted down, the gasket compresses, creating the seal.

There's a specific sequence of tightening the bolts found iN many manuals. I recommend you follow it to help insure no leak.
