Can't get EGR off!!

Got the EGR failure code and I hear I may just be able to clean it, either way I can;t get it off. How did you guys do it? I can't see a thing back there and can't even figure out what wrench to use on the retaining bolts.

Also, I accidentally took the vacuum off the fpr and fuel came out, doesn't that mean it's bad? It was all dirty too, black even.

The EGR is only held on by two 10mm nuts. Pull the nuts and the EGR will pop off. I have never been able to clean the thing, just buy a new one and be done with it. Yes your FPR is shot too.

The nuts on the EGR are actually 1/2"-not metric (and your regulator needs to be replaced).

k thanks guys....I think I need a much bigger mirror than I've got too, that plus a worklight should work. Earlier, I nearly got it turning with the 1/2" but it kept slipping off, I'll have to try again tomorrow after work.

good luck...the driver's side is designed so poorly it might as well have been riveted on...no room for a box-end wrench...no room for anything...mine is stripped now if it wasn't prior...

I would move the solenoid out of the way and maybe even the fuel lines if your capable... all they need is about 1/8" more room for the box end to fit on the nut and probably the stripping wouldn't happen...the passenger side nut is EASY to remove...

mine took 10 minutes to take off, just take the Air tubing from the headers off and gives you alot more room from both sides.

Really isn't that hard to remove. You can pretty much do it by "touch", without even using the mirror. Never saw one with the nut seized to the stud. Maybe someone cross-threaded it.

You have a 93. That is the only year that has the AIR tubing running behind the EGR valve. The original poster has a 94.... AIR tubing is nowhere near the EGR and does not have to be removed.

when I move this hose to the brake cylinder out of my way, like bend it in the middle:

It makes a hiss, making me think its cracked somewhere under the heat wrapping....I guess I need a new one but I can't figure out what it's called and can't find it.

(note - the green arrow is hard to see).

That's the vacuum line for the brake booster. Check at the plastic piece the hose attaches to, that is pushed into the grommet on the brake booster. Its usually pretty loose, and will leak if you push on it.
