Wierd blown headgasket incident

Well I couldnt figure out the issue I had on my car after the cam swap and I didnt have anymore time either so I took it to a shop around town. It turned out to be the injector orings were bad so that was my flooding problem and the vacuum leak. Then they said they were sitting there and the car was idleing great while they were filling up with antifreeze then right when it got to the temperature where the thermo would open the car started running like crap then was spitting water at the out of the radiator fill. Said it was a blown headgasket. Thats just really wierd to me how that could happen when the heads werent messed with and the car hasnt been overheated since Ive had it (about a year). Does this sound unusual to anyone else.

Could it be that while they were filling the radiator, they weren't watching it real close, an air bubble burped coolant out of the fill neck and all over the optispark and it started running like crap from that? I'd do a compression check before assuming the head gasket is blown.
