The optisparks(distributors) are what have the worst reputation for the LT1s, especially on that particular year where it is a non-vented design. The rear intake manifold is notorious for oil leaks and the power window motors, if so equipped, are subpar and common for failures as well.

Check for oil leaks, as GTP said, rear of the intake manifold is a common place. Check for coolant leaks, look at where the water pump sits flush against the block, look at the bottom of the water pump, there is a little "weap" hole, see if any coolant is coming out of it. As usual, check for any weird noises: knocks, ticks, etc. If you are not familiar with the engine, have someone who is check it out for you. Good luck.

Number one is who are you buying it from: original owner, used car lot, kid, adult, et al. This should at least put you in the right frame of mind as a place to start.

Number two: With a car that old, you are going to get what you see and feel. I.e. what does it look like, i.e., condition, inside and out. And how does the engine sound and how does it run.

Are there any documents regarding repairs, maintenance, mods, etc.

If it checks out as far as condition, both looks and drivability and you aren't getting it from a gypo car dealer, or a kid, then you might be lucky.

If the two suggestions up top don't check out, run like the wind, JMHO
