well what do you know.... (opti)
well what do you know.... (opti)
Just a heads up to anyone that lives in humid climates and doesn't daily drive their optispark equipped LT1.
It seems letting your car sit results in a rusted opti in about 1 year. I have only put about 1000 miles on my car since my last opti and it just took a crap on me in the same matter as my last *rusted* opti. I never had problems with this untill i STOPPED daily driving the car. Now I will make a point to drive this thing so mositure doesn't build up.
code
16
36

I found instuctions 4 or 5 years ago and it looked like a daunting task. Granted I am alot better with my LT1 now then I was then.
Is it just easier to get a dynaspark that comes in the 94 style and comes vent ready?
i've already got a ACDELCO going back on today, i figured its going back into mild daily driver duty anyway now that im selling my beater in a week. I hope this one goes many years like my others did BEFORE I stopped driving it.

Easiest way to make it vented would be the MSD cap and rotor kit. It adds vents to the unvented opti.
The codes are high and low resolution failures so a cap and rotor will not fix this but the MSD cap and rotor would go a long ways towards preventing a reoccurance.

Condensation...... Try starting your car on one those real humid cool mornings.
I don't think you can simply vent an unvented unit with just the cap and rotor. I believe you have to have the entire distributor. Yes MSD has a vented unit for 94s.
If this guy is throwing a 16 or a 36. Just a cap and rotor will not fix his problem. His problem is from the low voltage feedback side.

^ yea like i said, im 100% sure my cap and rotor will have 0 ware on them.
its all the electronics behind them that are toast.
im not sure you remember helping me out last time with my opti hell last time speedy but its doing the same exact thing.......once my car is warmed up, its done.

What's funny is mine probably sits more than yours does. It's gotta be more humid here than almost anywhere. Just 25 miles from the shore and I don't (yet) have the problem. In fact as far as I know, the back half of my opti is original since I never replaced it since I bought the car used in 2001.
I think the rust may be caused or accelerated mainly by ozone, produced by the high voltage discharge at the cap contacts. GM specifically said they added the vent to remove the ozone. My unvented 94 started to act up at about 50K miles. It was full of rust, and the rust particles had blinded the optical sensor.
I just got done replacing my 2 yr old opti also. The cap and rotor was perfect when I got it apart. The electronics just quit on it. Code 16 and 36 also. The car would quit once everything got hot under the hood.
I drive my car about 2 times a week for just a few miles.

that is how my 1st one when out at about the same mileage.
high end break up.
