Steering column Different Length! Can I change The Shaft?

I have a 95 camaro that has a weird problem with the tilt mechanism bending up and slightly to the left. (almost like it is spring loaded) But if I want at any time I can push the steering wheel up a little bit. It sucks and feels like my beautiful car has a junky steering system. ..

I bought a column over a year ago and I dont even know from who.. it looked identical.. when I removed my column I found out it has a 1-2 inch shorter shaft at the very bottom where it connects to the U-joint. The column seems to be identical in every way except this very tailshaft length. It does have a different part number.... but it definately has a camaro key and levers etc...

Is it possible to swap out the shaft inside so I can use the top part of the new steering column and use the longer shaft that fits my car, from my column?

I haven't taken it apart yet, but I dont want to if this is not at all possible. It looks like their is some kind of spring like retaining clip at the bottom of the shaft right at the part where it gets fatter and the shaft enters the upper housing assembly. I dont want to stick my bendy column back into the car.... Doing the rag joint eliminator too... I will feel more comfortable with large rims knowing it is solid all the way.. is there a tutorial for this anywhere? anyone?

thanks guys - kurt

What do you mean by a "camaro key"?
Many upon MANY GM vehicles shared the same key type as the Camaro/Firebird.

yea. I guess it is a damn generic gm key. I found out when uninstalling an alarm that wasn't active under my dash that somone had installed quite a nice system. Wiring was done by the mecp book too. I capped all the pigtails that splice into the wiring harness so when I install my alarm I just need to extend wires to the already installed wires Piece of cake!! But somone also bypassed the resistor in key system. Makes it easier to fix my column. Can that tailshaft (the thick metal part that connects to U joint) be swapped for a tiny bit longer one? They lok identical except for that one thing..

Your other column probably came out of a wreck that had the shaft collapsed (that is what they are supposed to do). That could be why it is shorter.
