168 Tooth Flexplate and Starter Issues
168 Tooth Flexplate and Starter Issues
Desperetely need your help!
I recently had my engine rebuilt, but through miscommunications, my builder installed a 168-tooth flexplate instead of the factory 153 tooth. I did not find out until I tried to install the factory starter, and it makes contact with the flexplate about 1 inch before sitting/aligning itself with the engine block.
Just wondering if anyone know which starter would work with a 168 tooth flexplate and clear my Hooker Long-Tubes as well?
Would need part numbers and where to get.
This is a 1993 TA.
Thank You.

nope it worked perfectly, no shimming. All I had to do was enlarge the "hole" diameter of the cable from the battery for it to fit the larger post on the starter solenoid.. (fat one).
I dont know what happenned to the other guys posts. They somehow got deleted off this thread. Part # 3510 at your local autozone. It is $29.99 + $15.00 core.
I am not sure if this will work with stock exhaust, and it was a tight fit with Hooker LT's.
You will need to get an additional long starter bolt, the short one will not suffice. They sell them at Autozone too. I believe it bolts up using the same holes as in the stock starter.

The one I ended up getting was the #03-0485 gear reduction starter from Oreilly's http://www.oreillyauto.com/EW3/Displ...cycleCount=962. This one was smaller and much more powerful than the standard ones and fit right in with my headers. They wanted 124.99 and a 50 core charge but I had them call Autozone and they price matched the 89.99 and 20 core that Autozone had. The starter uses the two longer bolts and they are the staggered (diagonal) holes. Everything bolted up great and man does that thing crank the engine fast and start fast. I had used a cheapo standard starter before and it didn't last long from the heat, this one has a lifetime warranty.
