What is the black wire for near starter?
Hey guys,
My car is a 1997 Z28. I have been having issues with it running too rich and backfiring out exhaust - so I figured I would change the plugs.
While changing the rear plugs on passenger side - I noticed a black wire dangling around that came out of a large group of wires near the starter. It has an eye hook on the end, but was not connected to anything. It looks to me to be a ground wire of some sort - but I'm really not sure.
A friend of mine told me that he thinks its a ground wire - and that it may have something to do with the ignition or coil. I was thinking this wire not being grounded could be the cause of me running excessively rich. Just wanted to see if you guys knew what this wire is...

it grounds many things like the pcm, maf sensor, fuel pump relay so you might wanna fix that. it grounds on a bolt and nut off the oil pan but can be grounded anywhere

Wow!! Thanks for the responce - This could definitely be a major reason why I was running so rich. My spark plugs were fouling out after only a few hours of run time.
I would think that things such as the MAF sensor not being grounded would cuase fualty air/fuel readings and potentially cause the computer to dump in tons of un-needed fuel - which was cuasing me these problems.
Tommorow I will make sure that wire gets to a ground source
I can't believe the car even ran at all with that wire off!

I believe it is the ground from the earlier pic posted. This wire looks smaller than the one in the later pic posted - plus this wire is very close to that bracket that it shows it being mounted on in the earlier pic.
My only question is - isn't that bracket it shows it being grounded to an aluminum bracket? If so - how would that work?/ It needs to be grounded to metal. So I'm thinking I will be better off grounding it to the engine block or the oil pan or something....
