Why does my alternator bracket keep breaking!?!

Ok probably within the last 6 months i've gone through 3 alternator brackets!! My second one was about a month ago and now my 3rd one happened tonight. All 3 times they broke at the same spot. It cracked where the upper and lower bolt holes go where you mount the alternator on. My bro says its cause of the torque which i think is BS!! Im getting tired of replacing the brackets because they are not fun to do. What would cause this from happening? The alternator is new, belt fairly new. Would my best bet be to get a relocation kit from speedspecialty? i need some help guys, thanks

I'm definately not the expert, but a couple of thoughts...(not sure if the LT1 and LS1 are the same)

Mine has 4 mounting bolts... basically on all for "corners" of the alt... (reduces flexing).

Do you have the right belt on? Seems like too much tension on it??

Tensioner pulleys... can they tighten over time??? Wouldn't have thought so, due to spring weakening, but worth a looksee..

Tensioner. Not too strong but sticking and now its jerking on the belt. See if it's jumpy. BTW whenever you change the belt, change the tensioner also.

excuse the dirtyness, the p/s pump went out a week ago and made a mess. Well here is a pic of the break, you can see both "ears" on the bracket where the alternator bolts up just broke clean.

Not sure if this applies to the LT1 motor. But on an L98 there is a supporting bracket that goes from the back of the alternator to the first stud on the headers. If this is missing on a L98 the aluminum bracket will break like yours.

I ran my alternator for years without the support bracket either... something must be seriously wrong with your tensioner like someone mentioned above.

I've never seen a break like that, what year is your car 93 or 94?

its a 94 camaro. I dont have any bracket behind the alternator, is there suppose to be one? The tensioner and idler puller have been replaced last year so i dont think that should be the problem.

If you're not using the brace that bolts from behind the alt. to an intake manifold stud then that's a big possibility as to why it broke.

sounds like your missing some hardware, that would keep the alt in line under acceleration. Those two that bolt on from the back I would think would keep it from twisting.

Like said above me the brace needs to come off the intake manifold and bolt to the back of the alt.

There's two brackets for the alternator isn't there? One that bolts to the intake manifold that's kind of a y-shape and another one that bolt's to the block or a manifold stud or something.

Thats what I was thinking...just cause everyone else runs theres like that doesen't mean that it wouldn't be your problem....I sure would put that brace on there
